Buffalo Bills' Bye Week Comes at the Perfect Time

Robert BargerOct 8, 2008

As I sat on my couch, watching last Sunday's Buffalo Bills game, I saw Trent Edwards laying on the turf after a big hit from Adrian Wilson. I began thinking to myself, "That's it, there goes our season." Enter J.P. Losman, last year's starter at the beginning of the season and the Bills' first-round draft pick in the 2004 Draft.

After a promising 2006 season, J.P. seemed to be the answer Bills fans had been looking for at quarterback since the great Jim Kelly retired. After a few bad breaks and an injury in 2007, Losman lost his job to Edwards and hasn't looked the same since.

Many people would say its great having a backup like J.P., but look at it from a different stand point. Losman made it publicly known that he wanted to be traded out of Buffalo following the 2007 season.

He wasn't and was then stuck behind Edwards on the depth chart. Sunday was the perfect chance for Losman to help bring his stock up from the basement, but instead he began digging into the basement floor.

After hearing what the injury was to Edwards, I began to relax a bit, knowing that following the Cardinals game, the Bills had a bye week. This meant that with everything going the way it should, Edwards would be back in there lineup for the Oct. 19 game against the Chargers.

With Edwards in, the Bills have a better chance of winning; he may not throw the ball 63 yards in the air like J.P., but he can manage the game better. He doesn't make the mistakes that Losman made on Sunday. He can also  keep the offense on the field, giving the defense a much needed rest.

Entering the bye week, Buffalo has two key players that missed Sundays game with injuries. Starting quarterback Trent Edwards, and maybe the most underlooked one, starting cornerback Terrence McGee, who was greatly missed at his corner spot Sunday against the Cardinals.

McGee, who is recovering from a sprained knee, should be back in the lineup next Sunday against the Chargers, helping that pass defense that struggled against the Cardinals. There are also a few players that played Sunday with nagging injuries: defensive tackle Marcus Stroud, who is suffering from a shoulder injury, and defensive end Aaron Schobel, who has been missing practices with a foot injury.

Also, our electrifying punt returner, Roscoe Parrish, who is recovering from thumb surgery, began practicing again this week.

We all know that, at this point in the season, everyone is struggling with some type of injury, but for the Bills, who have a schedule that so far has been good to them, the bye week may be just what they needed to allow for players to heal and prepare for the run to secure their spot on top the AFC East.
