Cricket: 2011 County Championship Division 1, Round 2

Joe WhitworthApr 18, 2011

Durham lead the way after two games of the 2011 season while Sussex are bottom as they didn't play this week.

Durham are top, having won one and drawn one so far, after a 146-run win over second-placed Yorkshire at Headingley.

Batting first, Durham compiled 327 thanks to Michael Di Venuto's 74, Michael Richardson's 67 and Liam Plunkett's 66 not out. Ryan Sidebottom was the best bowler with 4-72.

Yorkshire faltered to just 149, as the returning Graham Onions claimed 5-53 and Callum Thorp claimed 3-33. Joe Root's 45 was the only highlight of the innings for the home side.

Durham recovered from 124-5 to declare at 311-6 thanks to captain Dale Benkenstein's 150 and wicket-keeper Richardson's 76 not out.

Chasing 490 to win, last year's third-placed side made a valiant effort before eventually falling short on 343. Rich Pyrah (87) and Jonathan Bairstow's (81) efforts were in vain as Durham won by 146 runs.

Steve Borthwick (3-49) and Liam Plunkett (3-75) sealed the win.

Warwickshire are third after a surprising innings and a 382-run thrashing of last year's runners-up Somerset.

Varun Chopra compiled 210, Chris Woakes compiled 129 as Darren Maddy (67) and Ant Botha (64) also passed 50 in a mammoth total of 642.

Charl Willoughby's 4-139 and Ajantha Mendis' 4-183, including 14 no balls, did not hide the damage.

In their first innings, Somerset crumbled from 118-1 to 210 all out, despite Arul Suppiah's 62 as Woakes (6-85) had the batsmen in all sorts of trouble.

However, things only got worse for title-favourites Somerset as they were skittled for just 50—their lowest first-class score since 1968. It represented the sixth-largest margin of defeat in County Championship history and the largest since 1921.

Craig Kieswetter (13) and Jos Buttler (12) were the only men to pass seven as Rikki Clarke took 5-10, Woakes took 3-16 and Andrew Miler took 2-15 to seal the innings and the 382-run win for Warwickshire.

Holders Nottinghamshire won their first game of the 2011 season by beating Hampshire by nine wickets at Trent Bridge.

The first time around, Hampshire posted 218 thanks to Dominic Cork's 48 and Jimmy Adams' 45. Andre Adams (5-54) and Charlie Shreck (4-51) were on top of their bowling game.

Nottinghamshire wobbled to 118-5 in reply, before Samit Patel hit 116 and Chris Read hit 54 to post 327, including 52 extras. David Griffiths was the pick of the away side's bowlers with 6-85.

The second time around, Hampshire fell away to just 131 as James Vince was left stranded, unbeaten on 59. Andre Adams (6-31) again tormented the batsmen.

The home side knocked off the 23 runs they needed for victory with the loss of just one wicket.

Lancashire and Worcestershire play their second game of the season as they host Somerset and Warwickshire respectively, while top plays bottom as Durham face Sussex from April 20.
