Weekend Recap: Victor Ortiz, Amir Khan and Four Fighters Who Lost Their '0'

First LastApr 18, 2011

Boxing fans were blessed with another entertaining and action-packed weekend of boxing.

Some of the featured fighters this past weekend include Juan Manuel Lopez, Victor Ortiz, Amir Khan and Andre Berto.

There were some upsets, comebacks and stars being tested and reborn over the course of the weekend, and it's worth taking a look at.

Friday Night Fights also put on an entertaining card featuring Ruslan Provodnikov making his second appearance this season after losing for the first time in his career earlier this year.

Victor Ortiz Upsets Andre Berto and Silences the Critics

Ever since newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2) lost to Marcos Maidana in 2009, critics have been quick to mark off the 24-year-old as a fighter who didn't have what it takes to compete with the best.

What he did in his thrilling slugfest with top three welterweight boxer Andre Berto (27-1) was not only defeat the previously unbeaten champion, but also answer questions about his desire to do what it takes to be one of the best.

Twelve rounds and four knockdowns later, Ortiz was victorious with the scores 114-111, 114-112 and 115-110, earning the biggest victory of his career.

Questions about his desire, heart and fighting ability can all be put to rest. He did more than answer them this weekend.

Berto, on the other hand, was made out to be slightly more overrated than what people thought, although he is still a very good prospect. The welterweight contender, who was only ranked behind Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., fought well and dropped Ortiz twice, but could not take advantage of it.

In Amir Khan's (25-1, 17 KO) somewhat disappointing victory over previously unbeaten boxer Paul McCloskey (22-1) on Saturday, the light-welterweight boxer didn't make the most convincing case for being the next best challenger for WBC and WBO light-welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO).

Khan vs. Bradley will possibly take place July 23rd, but both boxers' previous wins have both come by technical decision after headbutts caused a gash on their opponents. Together, they have five technical-decision victories.

It's what is going to hold back from Bradley getting the mega-fight with superstars Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, and I'm calling it now that this bout also ends by technical decision.

Juan Manuel Lopez and Bob Arum Lose Their Chance with Yuriorkis Gamboa

3 of 5

Top-10 pound-for-pound and top featherweight Juan Manuel Lopez (30-1, 27 KO) lost for the first time in his professional career after Orlando Salido (35-11-2) defeated him in the main event on Showtime.

The Puerto Rican star was knocked down in the fifth round and fought back valiantly until the bout was stopped in the eighth round. The stoppage was premature in most fans' eyes.

The unbeaten champ was not given the benefit of the doubt after the 30-year-old from Mexico got him against the ropes ropes and unloaded a flurry to warrant the stoppage.

More than Lopez's unbeaten streak was lost. He also lost the chance at fighting Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16 KO) in arguably one of the top three biggest fights in boxing.

Promoter Bob Arum was hoping to build up both fighters' reputations throughout the boxing community before having the two meet in a mega-fight and perhaps one of the biggest fights in featherweight history.

Gamboa holds a convincing victory over Orlando Salido so it will take some time before either boxer rebuilds their records to get a shot at the WBA world featherweight champion.

Ivan Popoca the First of Four to Lose His '0'

4 of 5

Ivan Popoca was 15-0-1 going into his light-welterweight bout with Ruslan Provodnikov (19-1, 13 KO), but did not remain undefeated after being stopped in the eighth round in the main event of Friday Night Fights.

Popoca, along with Berto, Lopez and McCloskey ,all lost for the first time in their careers last weekend in what is the biggest story of 2011. There have been a series of undefeated prospects and up-and-comers losing for the first time, and they will not be the last.

It's a reassuring sign that they are taking on the best the division has to offer, but it is also a sign that maybe they aren't what they were made out to be.

Look for many strong comebacks like the one Provodnikov provided from all of the previously unbeaten boxer, who will be looking to prove major points in their next bouts.

Chris John Extends Undefeated Record to 45-0; Is Gamboa Next?

5 of 5

Top featherweight and Indonesian boxer Chris John (45-0, 22 KO) took another significant, but minor step in the featherweight division after defeating Daud Cino Yordan (27-2) over 12 rounds.

It was a convincing victory with the scores 117-111, 116-112 and 116-112 for the 31-year-old, but with Juanma Lopez losing, is a bout with Yuriorkis Gamboa next? Let's hope so.

It's the next biggest fight between two undefeated stars and is one that could draw a lot of attention if it happens.

John has a serious chance of upsetting the Cuban Olympic gold medalist and has the opportunity to take part in one of the biggest fights to be made in the sport.
