Saul Alvarez vs Ryan Rhodes Live-Blogging, Round-by-Round Coverage & Results
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (36-0-1, 26 KOs) will make the first defense of his newly won WBC light middleweight (154 lbs) world championship against tough rugged contender Ryan Rhodes (45-4, 31 KOs) tonight in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico with a live broadcast from HBO airing at 10:30pm ET/PT .
I'll be giving a live-blog of the fight with description and insight as to what's going on in the ring.
34-year-old British fighter Rhodes comes with a tough awkward style. He can hit with both hands, switch stances at any time, and comes hungry to take his first world title.
Rhodes has fought on the major world stage twice before at middleweight (160 lbs.), losing both times.
Rhodes's last loss came in 2006. He has since moved back down to light middleweight, where he has never suffered a loss.
He's knocked out his last four opponents, not one of this previous four saw the beginning of the eighth round.
Alvarez hopes to have a different fate.
The 20-year-old Mexican fighter Alvarez hopes to impress his hometown fans who adoringly call him "Canelo," meaning cinnamon head in Spanish because of his unusual red hair.
He sees this fight as a tough fight with potential to ascend him further up the ranks toward even bigger fights like Miguel Cotto or Manny Pacquiao.
Though Alvarez has a lengthy record, it's mostly been against journeymen and flimsy competition up until recently.
His last five fights have been against higher-level journeymen and title contenders, including an impressive six-round knockout of former world champion Carlos Baldomir (45-12-6, 14 KOs).
Alvarez won his WBC world championship this past March with a dominating unanimous decision over Matthew Hatton (41-5-2, 16 KOs), the brother of retired British legend Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KOs).
He makes his first defense against Rhodes in a match that many believe he could easily lose.
Before Alvarez and Rhodes square off, super featherweight (130 lbs) contender Jason Litzau (28-2, 21 KOs) will face undefeated Adrian Broner (20-0, 16 KOs).
Broner last won a unanimous decision against the impeccable Daniel Ponce de Leon (41-3, 34 KOs) this past March.
Litzau last won a split decision over Celestino Caballero (34-3, 23 KOs) last November in what could easily be called the upset of the year in 2010.
