Arsenal Transfer Prospects: Why It's Make or Break for Wenger This Summer

Callum D'SouzaApr 24, 2011

Arsenal fans will eagerly await the Summer Transfer Window as the saviour to the Gunners ongoing trophy drought. 2010-11 is now destined to end without silverware for the sixth successive season after a 3-3 draw quelled their English Premier League title hopes.

Manchester United are now certain to take a deserved 12th Premier League title despite Sir Alex Ferguson's men still having four matches to play.

The Gunner's campaign will be looked back as the season that should of been after Arsene Wenger's men had more than enough chances to not only secure the EPL at an early stage, but numerous other achievements.

Just under two months ago Arsenal found themselves heading into the Carling Cup final, the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, the FA Cup quarterfinals and well in reach of both United and the Premier League crown.

However, injuries and a genuine lack of mentality resulted in a horrific demise which dismantled Wenger's season with his young squad losing the Carling Cup final by their own devices, elimination from Europe and the FA Cup and successive draws that ultimately diminished their Premier League aspirations.

However, the Arsenal board has instilled a £40 million transfer budget for Wenger to implement quality changes into his youthful squad to ensure that next season Arsenal diminish their trophy drought. Notorious for being tentative and cheap in the transfer window, Wenger now has the ideal opportunity to finally spend big and attract quality, winning services.

It is vital that the Frenchman properly utilizes these funds as the upcoming summer window could result in a significant demise for the North London giants. The main English rivals for Arsenal all boast larger transfer budgets and are considerably stronger at attracting big-name players.

Manchester City have endless funds enabling them to pay ridiculous amounts for players whilst Chelsea are also in a similar position.

The Blues may have also endured a thoroughly disappointing season and shocked world football by spending £50 million for striker Fernando Torres, but the London giants are certain to sign strongly this summer and Torres's form drought also looks to be eradicated.

Liverpool have shrugged off their early season decline under Roy Hodgson thanks to the arrival of new manager Kenny Daglish, who boast a formidable strike pairing with Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. The Reds are also looking to spend big with Blackpool captain Charlie Adam and Aston Villa dynamo Ashley Young the main targets.

Manchester United are also never shy to spend big when necessary and although Sir Alex Ferguson's men are destined to end the season as England's Champions, it has not been the most convincing season for United.

Granted Arsenal have many positives to take from 2010-11. In terms of personal development of players there is a huge boost with the likes of Samir Nasri, Jack Wilshere, Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou all enjoying strong seasons whilst Wojciech Szczesny has established himself as one of the best young keepers in world football.

However, the future of captain and midfield maestro Cesc Fabregas is still very uncertain as one cannot tell whether the Spaniard will depart to boyhood club Barcelona after another disappointing Arsenal season.

Meanwhile, key squad members Gael Clichy, Nicklas Bendtner and Andrei Arshavin are also uncertain of their presence at the Emirates.

Changes are certain to occur at the Emirates which could potentially see Arsenal drop considerably with the equality of English football intensifying. Many Arsenal fans and critics are seriously questioning Wenger's integrity as a manager and should the Frenchman be unable to sign strongly this summer then who knows what the future holds for the Gunners.
