Fedor Emelianenko: Is a Fight Against Dan Henderson the Best Decision for Him?

Mike HodgesApr 12, 2011

Since suffering back-to back losses for the first time in his legendary career, Fedor Emelianenko has had some time away from the spotlight to ponder his next move.

The last time fans got a glimpse of the former Pride FC star, he was dominated by a bigger opponent in Antonio "Big Foot" Silva, ultimately eliminating him from Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.

It was a loss that could very well determine the fate of Strikeforce's biggest acquisition and for the company's marketing ability as a credible organization, who has taken a backseat to UFC for a quite some time, while attempting to compete with their rivals.

However, according to multiple sources, a deal is pending on a potential super-fight between Emelianenko and Strikeforce's current light heavyweight champion, Dan Henderson. Rumors have circulated over which weight class the bout will take place, and if Henderson's title will be defended.

While Strikeforce has garnered more attention lately, due to being bought-out by rival company Zuffa, LLC, the confirmation of this bout will propel the San Jose-based organization to new heights and it will attract interest from the casual mixed martial arts fans. It will be a smart decision on the company's behalf to add some credibility and ratings to it's product.

But is it in the best interest of Emelianenko to accept the fight at this point in his career?

Traditionally, it is not always fitting to setup a fight between two competitors, especially when both of them are on opposite paths. Henderson is riding a two-fight win streak, while Emelianenko has tasted defeat two consecutive times. It can only do one of two things for either fighter: Build momentum or shatter their confidence.

Another factor that plays a spoiler to this situation is that Emelianenko's status as the best heavyweight, and pound-for-pound fighter, is gone and therefore hurts the marketability of this potential dream match.

But it is well documented that one thing the Russian heavyweight still holds onto is his legacy, and a part of what makes his legacy so intriguing to MMA fans is his ability to overcome adversity.

This might be one of those times.

Only a credible opponent like Henderson, who is a legend in the sport as well, would interest and motivate Emelianenko to return. Not to mention an opponent, who would actually compete against Emelianenko, something fans haven't witnessed since the Russian's heavyweight bout versus Mirko Cro Cop in 2006.

A win over a legendary fighter like Henderson, would not only raise Emelianenko's marketability once again, but more importantly, revive his career. It is a challenge that Emelianenko is more than capable of accomplishing, but is he willing to go forth and compete?

Considering his fall from glory, Emelianenko hasn't looked more vulnerable than in his past two fights and it makes you wonder if Strikeforce held onto their prized possession a little too long.
