Strikeforce CEO: Nothing Stopping UFC-Strikeforce Fights

Sal DeRoseApr 10, 2011

Since Zuffa purchased Strikeforce, numerous media outlets and fans alike have discussed a merger between Strikeforce and the UFC. Those debates include what a card would look like if the two organizations were to have a crossover card to settle the discussion once and for all on numerous dream fights.

Some of those dream fights include names like Cain Velasquez, Brock Lesnar, Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Frankie Edgar and Gilbert Melendez.

According to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, nothing is stopping the two promotions from putting on what could only be described as the "Super Bowl of MMA" card.

"I think, you know what? Let the Strikeforce guys fight the UFC guys," Coker said Saturday night at Diaz vs. Daley. "I'd love to see it. To me, Alistair Overeem versus Cain Velasquez? Let's do it. Or Fedor fighting Brock Lesnar. There's nothing to say these guys can't fight each other."

According to Coker, Strikeforce's contracts with its fighters and with the Showtime network aren't hurdles preventing these mega-cards from happening and are "something that we'll have to work out," according to Coker.

The fights would either happen on UFC pay-per-view or on Showtime.

Returning to the Super Bowl reference, it would be like the AFL and NFL merging to become one giant league and having a year-end event to commemorate the top teams from each league, like Coker said.

"I love Strikeforce and I want to see it continue for many years, and I'm going to work my ass off to make sure it's profitable," he said. "This roster that we've built at Strikeforce is unbelievable, and everybody knows that. We're going to continue to put these great fights on, and we have the fighters to do that. But to me, why can't you build the AFC and the NFC and let's do a Super Bowl fight? That's what I'd like to see."

Fans have begged and pleaded for a merger of the two that could finally see someone like Fedor make his way into the Octagon after numerous failed attempts to sign him. Even bringing over fighters like Overeem, Nick Diaz and Gegard Mousasi has excited fans to see them in action under the UFC banner.

"I think when the fans demand it, that's when those fights will happen," Coker said. "We have a great relationship with Showtime, and I think that the fighters you see on Showtime will continue fighting on Showtime, but at some point, I think, you know, let's get it on."
