Fedor Emelianenko Considering Move to Light Heavyweight Despite M-1's Thoughts

Sal DeRoseApr 8, 2011

Just a month ago, it was M-1 saying that one of the best fighters of all-time, Fedor Emelianenko, wouldn't be making a move to light heavyweight after being outsized in his last two fights.

“At this time, it is all rumor with no truth. It’s not anything M-1 has considered at all,” Head of PR at M-1, Eric Nicholls told MiddleEasy last month. “Should it be decided that Fedor would consider dropping to 205, M-1 would make an official announcement.”

But now it seems Fedor is showing a little backbone and is actually considering a move to light heavyweight to begin a new career there.

“Yes, I have talked about [dropping to 205] with my manager, Vadim Finklestein, but as far as I know, there has been no offer made by Strikeforce for me to fight as a light heavyweight,” Fedor said in an interview with the Dutch website MixFight.NL.

“It was not the size or weight advantage that caused my loss [to Silva]. It's just a fight and anything can happen. The game plan did not work out the way I wanted it to, but the weight was definitely not the reason.”

Fedor has dazzled audiences with a great display of fighting at the heavyweight division and has beaten fighters who held a significant size advantage over him.

But in his last two fights, he has been outsized by the likes of Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva, leading many to believe Fedor's career is just about over.

A move to the light heavyweight division signals new challenges and could end up with a dream fight for the Strikeforce company if Fedor and Dan Henderson would fight for the light heavyweight title.

Fedor came very close to retiring after his latest loss to Silva.

“For me it was a moment of disappointment when I lost the fight against Antonio Silva. It was not a moment of weakness, but at that particular time it was the way I felt,” Fedor said. “Back in Russia, I talked about it with my management and my spiritual father, and my decision now is to continue fighting.”

As for now, Fedor wants a rematch with his two latest losses. When asked who he would want to rematch with, Fedor gave the obvious answers.

“It would be Antonio Silva and Fabricio Werdum.”
