Friday Night Fights: Marco Antonio Rubio Stops Undefeated Lemieux in Seven

First LastApr 8, 2011

From the Bell Centre, Monteal, Quebec, Canada, Marco Antonio Rubio (49-5-1, 42 KO) took on undefeated prospect David Lemieux (25-0, 24 KO) in the main event of Friday Night Fights. Both fighters had a combined 66 knockouts in 74 victories going into the bout.

Main Event: Marco Antonio Rubio def. David Lemieux by TKO in round seven.

Rubio picked up a much needed victory after beating the previously unbeaten prospect Lemieux in the seventh round this evening. It was his 50th victory and 43rd win by knockout. Lemieux was fighting in his hometown and was thought to be the next big Canadian star.

Lemieux is not the first undefeated prospect to lose on this season of Friday Night Fights. Yordanis Despaigne, Ruslan Provodnikov and Maxim Vlasov all lost for the first time earlier this year in some close and some not so close matchups versus opponents they were heavily favored to beat.

With the win, Rubio picks up his seventh victory in a row since losing to a then undefeated Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik. The 30-year-old from Mexico will look to reestablish his position in a division he has fought over half his career in.

The winner was made the mandatory challenger for WBC middleweight title currently held by Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 19 KO). He is scheduled to face unbeaten Mexican star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KO). The bout is scheduled for June 4th at the Staples Center in California.

Rubio will await the winner of that fight and possibly fight him near the end of the year.

Undercard Results: Adonis Stevenson (14-1) def. Derek Edwards (25-1) by knockout in third round.

Both super-middleweight boxers were unbeaten going into 2010 but picked up their first professional defeats by knockout and haven't fought since. This was a return bout for both, and it payed off for the 33-year-old from Quebec.

During the second round, Stevenson scored two knockdowns with two straight lefts in the final minute of the round. Edwards survived the round but was left with a bloody face going into the third. Stevenson outlanded Edwards 29-13 in the second.

The end came in the third when Stevenson landed a series of straight lefts followed by a huge left that launched Edwards into the ropes. The referee quickly called a stop to the bout.
