WWE Power Rankings: Sin Cara & the 20 Best Non-American Wrestlers in WWE History
Throughout the years, the WWE roster has consisted mainly of American (US) wrestlers, but there have also been some wrestlers from other nationalities.
They are mostly Canadian, Mexican and from the UK, but I included wrestlers from every continent. I tried to only include one from each country, but that was impossible, Mexico, Canada and the UK have multiple entrants.
Honorable Mentions
1 of 21
I'd like to include two kinds of guys in this category:
1) American wrestlers with an international descent, such as Rey Mysterio, Batista (pictured) or The Rock.
2) Guys that have a huge following in their original countries, but don't have a great impact in the WWE, guys like Yoshi Tatsu or The Great Khali.
20) Sin Cara (Mexico)
2 of 21
Born in: Mexico DF, Mexico
We start off with WWE's newest acquisition, straight from Mexico to your TVs, Sin Cara (literally, without a face).
We have yet to see more from him, but for now we know that he has amazing athleticism, is exciting to watch and doesn't like bullies.
He made his TV in ring debut on RAW this week, where we saw him defeat Primo (I didn't even know Primo was still in the WWE) and perform an awesome finisher.
He's got the potential to be great, but for now he's just in on the 20th spot.
19) Ezekiel Jackson (Guyana)
3 of 21
Born in: Linden, Guyana
From RAW to SmackDown, next up is Big Zeke, Ezekiel Jackson.
This guy first made his impact in WWE's ECW, where he was part of a stable with William Regal and Vladimir Kozlov. On the last episode of the show he went on to defeat Christian for the title, which credited him as the last eve ECW Champion.
Now on SmackDown, he's part of the Corre and probably their most fearsome member.
18) Justin Gabriel (South Africa)
4 of 21
Born in: Cape Town, South Africa
We continue with another member of The Corre, former two time and current Tag Team Champion (all with Heath Slater) and the first ever South African wrestler in the WWE.
After spending time in the FCW, he was one of the entrants of the first season of NXT, where he finished third. He made his first impact in the WWE as part of the original Nexus, but when CM Punk joined and reformed it, he left the stable and the show to go on to SmackDown and join The Corre.
His 450 Splash is one of the most showy finisher in the WWE and combined with his dynamic style, it results on a exciting guy with a seemingly great future.
17) Kofi Kingston (Ghana)
5 of 21
Born in: Ghana, West Africa
Former 3 time Intercontineltal Champion, US Champion, Tag Team Champion (with CM Punk) and ranked 26th on the "best 500 singles wrestlers" by Pro Wrestling Illustrated.
Another exciting competitor who has great potential and has already won multiple championships.
16) Drew McIntyre (Scotland, UK)
6 of 21
Born in: Ayr, Scotland
Former Intercontinental and Tag Team (with Cody Rhodes) Champion. Ranked the 30th best singles wrestler of 2010 by PWI.
He's the "Chosen One," handpicked my Mr. McMahon to be a future World Champion. He had a great showing on the Elimination Chamber and has also age on his side (he's only 25). He truly has the potential to be a World Champion.
15) William Regal (England, UK)
7 of 21
Born in: Staffordshire, England
Former three time Hardcore, two time Intercontinental, four time European and four time Tag Team Champion (once with Taijiri and Eugene & twice with Lance Storm). King of the Ring 2008.
The British Brawler has also been commissioner of the WWE and RAW General Manager. He's also trained guys like Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Brian Kendrick or Samoa Joe.
Now nearing the end of his career, he's one of the best technical wrestlers the WWE has ever seen. Even if he's not as spectacular as other guys may be, he gets in the ring and gets things done.
14) Wade Barret (England, UK)
8 of 21
Born in: Preston, England
We continue our English tour with the winner of the first season of NXT, Wade Barret.
His story is almost exactly the same as Gabriel's, it's just that he was the leader of the Nexus and as winner of NXT has had some Main Event matches.
13) Alberto Del Rio (Mexico)
9 of 21
Born in: San Luis Potosí, Mexico
Before joining the WWE and unmasking he was known as Dos Caras Jr. (literally two faces) and wrestled mainly in Mexico.
He's also been in professional MMA matches with a record of nine wins and five losses (9-5).
Just six months after joining WWE's main roster, he won the Royal Rumble and won a Championship match at WrestleMania 27, which he lost against Edge. He still is the Number 1 contender for the WHC and awaits an opponent for Extreme Rules, where he'll try to win the title.
12) Sheamus (Ireland)
10 of 21
Born in: Dublin, Republic of Ireland
Former two time WWE Champion and current US Champion, He's also the 2010 King of the Ring.
He started out in WWE's ECW, but was promptly promoted to RAW and soon after debuting in that show he was given a WWE Championship match after winning a battle royal. He took that opportunity and defeated Cena for the belt in his second ever PPV appearance. After that he lost it, entered a feud with HHH, regained the Championship, lost it again and went back to the upper mid card, winning the last King of the Ring tournament and the US Championship, for which he will probably have a match against Daniel Bryan at Extreme Rules.
11) Kane (Spain)
11 of 21
Born in: Madrid, Spain
OK, I kind of cheated in this one as he was just born in Spain but is only a US citizen.
Former two time Intercontinental, one time US, WWE, ECW, Hardocre World Heavyweight and ten time Tag Team Champion (thrice with The Undertaker, twice with Mankind & X-Pac and once with The Hurricane, RVD & The Big Show). He was the eighth Triple Crown Champion and the third Grand Slam Champion.
In the WWE since 1995, he's done almost everything in the WWE. And up until two years ago, he was the only man to wrestle The Undertaker twice in WrestleMania.
10) Edge (Canada)
12 of 21
Born in: Orangeville, Ontario, Canada.
Former one time US, four time WWE, five time Intercontinental, seven time (and current?) World Heavyweight and fourteen time Tag Team Champion (seven times with Christian, twice with Chris Benoit & Chris Jericho and once with Hulk Hogan, Rey Mysterio & Randy Orton).
He's also the King of the Ring 2001, Royal Rumble 2010 winner and the fourteenth Triple Crown Champion.
Now retiring (?) because of injury, the Ultimate Opportunist went from a great success in the Tag Team division alongside Christian, feuding the Dudleys and the Hardys (and creating the TLC match in the process) to an illustrious singles career, winning a total of eleven World Championships and multiple secondary titles.
9) Anoa'i Family (Samoa)
13 of 21
All the way from Samoa we have one of the great wrestling families, the Anoa'i family.
This family has been part of the WWE for decades, and most members of this family have had success in it. From the Wild Samoans, to Yokozuna, to Rikishi, to Umaga, to the Usos.
This family goes hand in hand with the Maivia family, also from Samoa.
Almost every single Samoan wrestler that has ever been in the WWE comes from this family tree.
8) Hart Family & Dungeon (Canada)
14 of 21
Another of the great wrestling families, from Canada, the Hart family.
Every member of this family has ties to wrestling, they are either wrestlers themselves, married to wrestlers, referees or promoters.
The Dungeon, the family's in house training facility, regarded as one of the toughest training in wrestling, has also produced a lot of WWE wrestler that went on to do great things, such as Greg Valentine, "Superstar" Billy Graham, Brian Pillman, Chris Jericho, Lance Storm or Chris Benoit.
7) Nikolai Volkoff (Croatia, Yugoslavia)
15 of 21
Born in: SR Croatia, Yugoslavia (now Republic of Croatia, an independent country)
Former four time Tag Team Champion (twice with Geto Mongol and once with Johnny de Fazio & The Iron Sheik).
Inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
6) the Iron Sheik (Iran)
16 of 21
Born in: Tehran, Iran
Former WWE and Tag Team Champion (with Nikolai Volkoff). He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
Even though his finisher, the "Camel Clutch," was without a doubt fearsome and he had several entertaining matches and feuds, he may be best remembered for being the guy Hogan beat for his first title and for his feud with Sgt. Slaughter.
5) Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka (Fiji)
17 of 21
Born in: Fiji
One of the first high fliers in WWE, he started out as a heel, but since people loved his style he turned face early. Had a lot of memorable matches and was part of the first ever WrestleMania main event as a corner man for Hogan and Mr. T.
It may be weird, but he'll probably be remembered as the guy Piper hit with a coconut in an episode of "Piper's Pit."
Even though he never won a title in the WWE, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996.
4) Bret Hart (Canada)
18 of 21
Born in: Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Former five time WWE, two time Intercontinental and Tag Team (with Jim Neidhart) and one time US champion. He won the King of the Ring in 1991 &1993 and went on to win the Royal Rumble the next year (1994).
He's the second Triple Crown Champion and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.
Maybe the best technical wrestler to ever set foot in a WWE ring. All his nicknames were right for him: "the Excellence of Execution" "The best there is, the best there was and the best there will ever be."
He will be remembered for a lot of great matches, such as the one hour Iron Man match against Shawn Michaels or the one that meant the start of the Stone Cold Era. But sadly he'll probably be most remembered for another match with HBK the one they had at the 1997 Survivor Series for the WWE Championship, popularly known as the "Montreal Screwjob," which lead him to cut all ties with the WWE up until about five years ago. Now they seem to have made peace.
3) André the Giant (France)
19 of 21
Born in: Grenoble, France
Former WWE and Tag Team Champion (with Haku).
A larger than life persona, a gentle giant, a lot can be said about André and all of it good. For years he was the biggest face the WWE had to offer. He wasn't pinned or submitted in the WWE since he joined in 1973 until WrestleMania 3, when he and Hogan created a moment that will probably live forever, as Hogan lifted André and body slammed him.
André suffered from gigantism and died in Paris in 1993 at the age of 46. When the WWE decided to start their Hall of Fame he was the first man ever inducted into it and the class of 1993 consisted solely of The Eight Wonder of the World, André The Giant.
2) "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (Canada)
20 of 21
Born in: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
Whenever people talk about guys with the best mic skills they forget this guy. He had the ability to manipulate people. He didn't even need to wrestle to create heat for himself or anyone else.
His interview segment "Piper's Pit" has created some of the most memorable moments in the WWE, such as Snuka getting hit with a coconut or André the Giant chokeslamming Piper, as well as some great phrases like "Just when they think they've got the answers, I change the questions."
His feud with Hogan was one of the greatest ever and it was what started WrestleMania, with a tag team match between Piper & Paul Orndorff with Bob Orton and Hogan & Mr. T with Jimmy Snuka.
He didn't even need to be a champion. He only won two championships in his entire career, his first one was an Intercontinental Championship, which he won at the 1992 Royal Rumble only to loss it at that year's WrestleMania.
His second title came in 2006, a year after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. It was a Tag Team Championship (with Ric Flair).
1) Bruno Sammartino (Italy)
21 of 21
Born in: Pizzoferrato, Italy
Former three time Tag Team Champion (with Dominic DeNucci, Tony Marino & Spiros Arion) and two time WWE Champion.
He was in the WWE from 1959 until 1988. In that time he managed to win the WWE championship twice, which isn't a great feat, what is is that the first reign is still the longest ever, he won the title on May 17, 1963 by defeating Buddy Rogers in 48 seconds. He defended it until January 18, 1971, when he was defeated by Ivan Koloff. The crowd went completely silent as they witnessed it, leading Sammartino to believe he had suffered some sort of hearing loss.
He held the title for a total of seven years, eight months and one day. That record is still standing and it may never be broken.
His second title, while shorter was also long, he won the title almost three years after losing it, on December 10, 1973, defeating Stan Stasiak for it. His title reign was supposed to last for only one year, but he kept getting bigger paychecks, he had the greatest financial wrestling deal at that point. He suffered injuries in early 1977 and decided to end his second title reign. He lost the Championship on April 30, 1977 to "Superstar" Billy Graham in a controversial way (Graham's feet were on the ropes as he pinned Sammartino).
This made him the first ever two time WWE World Champion. Combining both reigns, he held the title for more than 11 years.
