Brock Lesnar: Five Things We Learned About Him on the Ultimate Fighter

Sal DeRoseApr 6, 2011

We're only one episode into the 13th installment of The Ultimate Fighter, and already, we have learned about the secret man that is Brock Lesnar.

A polarizing figure in MMA and a well-known name outside of the sports following. People know about Lesnar and now know more.

There was a reason Lesnar was chosen and that was to help expose him more and help draw viewers to the program.

Here it is, what we have learned about Lesnar early on The Ultimate Fighter.

Brock Won't Get in Junior dos Santos' Face

1 of 5

It's the one thing that makes a reality show a reality show: feuds.

If you don't have argument and disagreement, it kind of kills the show. Outside of the one fight, people want to see people getting in each other's face.

People love to watch train wrecks on TV, but when you have a coach as cool, calm and collected as Junior dos Santos, it's not really all that interesting.

Lesnar was looked at as a polarizing figure in MMA, the prototypical tough guy or bad guy. For people who love him, they watch him to see him win, and the haters watch to see him lose his cool and point out his flaws to say why he isn't one of the faces of MMA.

Lesnar didn't seem to even really interact with dos Santos the first week. That might change in the coming weeks, but when there isn't an interaction, it kind of hurts viewers.

No one wants to watch Lesnar survey guys or talk about how much he wants to win. Most people want to see him get in the face of his opponent. People like watching other people explode.

Brock Will Push His Fighters

2 of 5

I could be the only one who feels this way, but I think Brock Lesnar could be a great coach. He could definitely help any of the wrestlers on his team with his pedigree in the sport. Shamar Bailey should have wished to be on Lesnar's team. Could you imagine him at the end of the show?

Lesnar knows what it takes to win as a former title winner with key wins over some great fighters in the heavyweight division. Plus, having his fighters go through his regiment and training methods could develop them pretty quickly.

The Ultimate Fighter isn't all about coaching, but Lesnar could divulge a lot of his secrets to these guys and create some good welterweight fighters for the future.

Brock Wants to Win the Season

3 of 5

You can tell Brock wants to win this season. He did his best to collect physically-fit fighters who had the desire and passion to become the next Ultimate Fighter.

Brock wants to take these guys and turn them into great fighters regardless of their skill level. Like Brock said in the first episode, if he doesn't get the best fighters: "We'll have to make chicken salad out of chicken s---."

Brock has the tools to help his team win this year and rebound after a lay-and-pray loss in the first match of the season.

It's not a big deal to win the season of The Ultimate Fighter as a coach. But it would be a nice momentum boost going into his fight with Junior dos Santos.

Brock Has a Chip on His Shoulder

4 of 5

Brock Lesnar lost his title to Cain Velasquez last October, and like any fighter in his position, he wants that title back around his waist.

Junior dos Santos is just another obstacle to Lesnar. He wants to be champion again and shut everyone up. That's what makes a good fighter, a burning desire to stand back up when you get knocked down.

That chip on his shoulder should be able to carry the one-time UFC heavyweight champion over dos Santos and back into a rematch with Velasquez.

This time around, Lesnar doesn't have all the stress he was dealing with last year.

Brock is not as Big of a TV Draw as He Was Thought to Be

5 of 5

It's not entirely his fault that ratings for the first episode are so horrible, but it does play a role.

Everyone thought Brock Lesnar would be a big draw on TV, just like he is on pay-per-view. But when you throw in a new time for the show and an opposing coach who is calm and doesn't provoke or attack back in Junior dos Santos, you get a pretty bad reality show.

Most reality shows draw in viewers due to their fights on set, and so far, through the first episode, we have nothing. Maybe him losing the belt has something to do with it. The haters might not watch because they already saw him lose which, was why they watched him in the first place.

We'll have to see how this progresses throughout the show. Maybe Lesnar will be able to turn around the ratings.
