Would Tom Zbikowski Rather Win a Boxing or Super Bowl Championship?
Baltimore Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski is scheduled for a four-round bout against Blake Warner April 23 in Thackerville, Oklahoma.
Zbikowski (3-0, 2 KO) narrowly emerged victorious in a four-round decision against Caleb Grummet March 26 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
“Tommy Z” hired Hall of Fame trainer Emmanuel Steward to work in his corner mere days before his match with Grummet.
The legendary Steward believes the two-time third-team AP All-American at Notre Dame has not yet scratched the surface of his potential as a prizefighter.
Nevertheless, after Zbikowski struggled against Grummet, Steward conceded that the former Fighting Irish star has much room to improve in the squared circle.
"Thank goodness it wasn't a six-round fight," Steward said after the contest two weeks ago. "He has to come with me for some serious boxing training. He has to be with me."
The National Football Post and Baltimore Sun reported “Tommy Z,” who compiled a 75-15 record as an amateur pugilist and advanced to the finals of the Chicago Golden Gloves, has agreed to fight May 21 in Cabazon, California, and June 4 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael revealed that, once the NFL lockout ends, Zbikowski would like to negotiate a contract that would enable him to both box and perform on the gridiron.
"Without a doubt—if I can get that worked out—that's my perfect world," Zbikowski told the Sun. "Other people might not feel that same way. If we can get that worked out, I can play at M&T Bank Stadium in the season and fight at M&T Bank Stadium in the offseason."
The Illinois native is tough and he could become a force under the tutelage of Steward.
“It’s great to watch him fight,” said Mike McCarthy, 28, a huge fight fan and native of Quincy. “He’s for real.”
No matter what ultimately becomes of his career as a prizefighter, Zbikowski is certainly seeking his “perfect world.”
