College Football Recruiting 2012: Power Ranking The Top Pro-Style QBs

Edwin WeathersbyApr 4, 2011

As of late, we've seen QB recruiting split into two types: pro style and duel threat. The dual-threat types are as dangerous at running as they are at passing. These being the Terrelle Pryor, Cam Newton, Vince Young, Denard Robinson and Jake Locker types of quarterbacks.

The pro-style types are your classic drop-back, pure pocket passers in the mold of a Jimmy Clausen, Christian Ponder, Andrew Luck, Kellen Moore or Landry Jones.

We've already unveiled our early rankings of the top dual-threat QBs, now it's time for the early pro-style list.

Here we go.

8. Maty Mauk

1 of 8

At 6'2", 190 pounds, Maty Mauk is one of the most productive QBs in the country. As a junior, he threw for over 5600 yards and 69 touchdowns.

Mauk has a great arm and shows little wasted motion in his delivery. He gets to his set point quickly, sets up well, scans the field and rifles the ball out. He's solid in the accuracy department and the football explodes out of his hand.

Notre Dame and Michigan, along with several other schools, have pursued Maty Mauk.

7. Bart Houston

2 of 8

If you start for Concord De La Salle (CA), you must have one important trait: knowing how to win.

Bart Houston is the current starter and has the tools of a top-flight prospect.

At 6'4", 200 pounds, Houston threw for nearly 2000 yards and 20 touchdowns for the NorCal powerhouse, and went 14-0 in 2010.

Along with a strong arm, Houston's 66.7 completion percentage proves he's an accurate passer. He can see over the rush, keeps his eyes downfield and makes sound decisions with he ball.

6. Shane Dillon

3 of 8

Boasting a 6'5", 185-pound frame, Shane Dillon's size immediately jumps at you. Dillon's size allows him to dictate his own throwing lanes, see over the rush and stand tall in the pocket.

He can make passes into tight windows, or throw change ups over defenders. Dillon anticipates well and looks like a QB that can develop into a good starter.

He's a solid leader, and really commands his huddle.

Florida State and Ohio State, among several others, have made offers to Dillon.

5. Zach Kline

4 of 8

Yes, it's a good year for QBs in California and I really like Zach Kline as well.

He's a gym rat who really displays a love for the game.

Kline is 6'2", 190 pounds with solid mechanics. He's shown good drop quickness, set-up speed, balance and weight transfer. He makes good decisions and has a solid arm, which allows him to make various passes. Kline's accuracy is good with deep throws, but great underneath and on intermediate routes.

He's committed to Cal.

4. Greyson Lambert

5 of 8

Greyson Lambert has been billed as the top QB in the Peach State for the past two seasons.

He's 6'5", 200 pounds and nearly reached 2000 yards last year, while recording 20 touchdown passes.

He has played mainly in a run-dominated offense, but as he gets more reps, his numbers will increase. Lambert has a good skill set, including a nice arm, good accuracy, field vision and good feet.

He has offers from Alabama, Miami, Clemson, BC, Louisville, NC State and Mississippi State.

3. Connor Brewer

6 of 8

There are some who could argue Connor Brewer could be a duel-threat QB, but we'll list him as a pro-styler for now. The 6'2", 195-pound Brewer has won multiple Arizona state championships.

He's a solid run threat with the ball and shows some toughness, hence the dual-threat tag. Yet, he is solid in the pocket due to his strong arm, great accuracy, awareness of defenders, feel for the game and pocket presence.

Brewer has committed to Texas.

2. Gunner Kiel

7 of 8

Gunner Kiel could move up to No.1 soon.

I really like the 6'4", 220-pound nephew of former Notre Dame four-year starter Blair Kiel.

Kiel has elite arm strength, showing a good throwing motion, a quick delivery and releases the ball in rhythm and on time. He doesn't let defenders get a jump on his throws, but can also throw loft balls to show off his touch. Kiel sees the field well, and rarely forces throws.

He has offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma amongst a host of others.

1. Zeke Pike

8 of 8

I'm not really sure where to list Zeke Pike, as he can be a dual-threat QB, a pro-style QB and has even been labeled as a linebacker and tight end prospect.

The 6'5", 220-pound Pike has a big time arm and can zip the ball all over the field and attack all three levels of the defense with ease. Pike also displays control and accuracy from the pocket.

He can get upfield with his legs and uses his size and strength to get tough yards when needed.

The only two schools I can think of that have not pursued Pike are Michigan State and Notre Dame, and that shouldn't be for long.
