Jon Jones Set to Defend UFC Title Against Rashad Evans in September or October

Sal DeRoseApr 4, 2011

UFC president Dana White already had the opponent Jon Jones would make his first title defense against, all that was left was the date.

White said on UG that Jones will defend his title against Rashad Evans in either September or October.

Both Jones and Evans use to train together with coach Greg Jackson at Jackson's camp in New Mexico. Now it seems a rivalry between Jones and Evans has been built up and Jackson is steering clear of any meddling in the fight between the two.

But that hasn't kept striking coach, Mike Winkeljohn from helping train Jones for his first title defense.

"I'm positive I'm going to be working with Jon Jones because, well, the kid didn't do anything wrong. We have a good relationship," Winkeljohn said in an interview with MMA Fighting.

Winkeljohn also doesn't think he has chosen a side in the feud between Jones and Evans. Evans believes he was done wrong by the Jackson camp about allowing Jones to train with them and various other reasons.

"Rashad lost to Machida, and he basically left. I know he left me, so that's how I feel. Choosing sides? I don't know if that's the term for it, but he made that choice. I didn't make that choice," Winkeljohn said.

Jones won the light heavyweight belt at UFC 128 against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Evans was originally slated to fight against Rua but had to pull out due to injury and instantly became the No. 1 contender against whoever won the title.
