Rola El-Halabi: Undefeated German Female Boxer Shot Before Day of Fight
Undefeated German female boxer Rola El-Halabi was shot allegedly by his step father before her scheduled fight last Friday against Irma Balijagic Adler of Bosnia for the vacant IBF lightweight title.
The suspected gunman was later identified as Roy El-Halabi, step father of the undefeated female boxer.
"Berlin police said El-Halabi's attacker shot his stepdaughter and two security guards, before he was arrested." inquirer.net reports.
"The three victims were taken to a local hospital, where they underwent surgery. Police said their injuries were not life threatening," the report added.
"The undefeated 25-year-old German was preparing to fight Irma Balijagic Adler of Bosnia for the vacant IBF lightweight title Friday night when her 44-year-old stepfather entered her dressing room and shot her in the hand, knee and feet", espn sports reports
According to a German newspaper report, El-Halabi split from her stepfather as a manager in January.
Rola El-Halabi told the German daily: "Papa rushed into the room. He threatened us with a gun in his hand and shouted 'Everyone out!' And then he shot me in the hand from three meters. I cried and screamed."
"When I had problems I could talk with him about anything, except when it was about boys. That was taboo," El-Halabi said.
El-Halabi won the WIBF and WIBA world titles in 2009 and has an 11-0 career record with six knockouts.
Rola El-Halabi was born in Beirut, Lebanon on April 8, 1985. She came to Germany with her family when she was eight months old. She got herself engaged in Thai and kick boxing as a teenager and in at age 15, she switched to amateur boxing.
At age 18, she became the youngest champion in the 145 lbs.division. She fought and won 10 straight professional fights until her last outing in June 2010 when she won against Olga Bojare of Latvia via a unanimous decision.
