Manny Pacquiao Flies to US for Next Phase of Training for Fight with Mosley
Top boxer Manny Pacquiao has left his training camp in the Philippines and moved to the Wild Card Gym in California on Saturday night for the second phase of training for his fight with Shane Mosley on May 7 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
On his return trip to the US, with him were trainer Freddie Roach, assistant trainers Buboy Fernandez and Nonoy Neri, strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza and other members of Team Pacquiao.
Pacquiao spent the last three weeks is Baguio City in northern Philippines along with Amir Khan who is scheduled to face Paul McClosky at the M.E.N. arena in Manchester, England on April 16.
Khan and Pacquiao are both training under Freddie Roach.
After his rigid physical conditioning under strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza, Pacquiao sparred with rated boxers Dave Rodela and Shawn Porter at the Shape Up gym inside the Cooyeesan Hotel in Baguio City.
Coach Freddie Roach said the pound-for-pound king will be doing more sparring with top boxers Rashad Halloway and Karim Mayfield at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.
"Training camp in Los Angeles will be totally different from the one we're having here (in the Philippines)," said Roach. "I'm looking forward to fewer distractions because we need to focus."
In his pre-departure statement at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Pacquiao said he's got Shane Mosley all figured out.
"I have studied him thoroughly...All his moves, how he attacks, how he retreats—I've figured out," he said, refusing to predict the outcome of the fight.
Pacquiao, who is a congressman representing Sarangani province in southern Philippines, attended to last-minute appointments, a send-off dinner and party at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Manila.
“There are too many things to do. We just had the ground-breaking for the hospital we’re going to build in Sarangani,” he said during the dinner, which was attended by approximately to 200 people.
In his departure comment, Pacquiao said, "I'm confident".
