UEFA Champions League: Top 10 Performances of Week Two

R LOct 3, 2008

Already so much great action in the UEFA Champions League after just two matches from each club. With the anticipation building, the elimination stages come closer and closer.

This week, Arsenal's dominance against FC Porto and Zenit St Petersburg's struggles were among the headlines.

Week Two is over, and with it, the top 10 performances.

10) AS Roma

After losing their group opener in dramatic fashion to CFR Cluj-Napoca, Roma kept their CL hopes alive with a 3-1 victory against Bourdeaux. Carlos Henrique's red card in the first half definitely helped, but the Giallorossi took full advantage, much to their credit.

Mirko Vucinic levelled the game, and Julio Baptista solidified the three points with two fine finishes in the box.

9) Robbie Keane

Keane finally got Anfield off his back—and a monkey probably too, with his first goal as a Liverpool striker. Fernando Torres sent a cross into the box, and the Irishman tapped it in nicely for a 2-0 lead against PSV Eindhoven.

With the first one out of the way, is Robbie Keane destined for many more goals at Anfield?

8) Robin Van Persie/Emmanuel Adebayor

Both men were off the mark against Hull City on the weekend. Each of them potted two goals against FC Porto and showed no hangover from the loss though. With a visit to Sunderland coming next, expect to see more scoring from these two and the entire Arsenal squad.

7) Vincenzo Iaquinta

Bate Borisov looked destined to upstage CFR-Cluj's upset against Roma with a victory against Juventus. It was not to be though. Iaquinta nodded home a header in the box to cut the lead in half before tying it up at the stroke of half-time with a slick shot between the legs of Bate goalkeeper, Sergei Veremko.

6) Dimitar Berbatov

Like his former teammate Keane, Berbatov got off the mark with his first Manchester United goals. To be fair, the Bulgarian struck twice, and both were much classier finishes.

First, Thomas Augustinussen flicked a pass very poorly towards his goalie. With the ball in the air, Berbatov smashed it right past Karim Zaza like it was nothing. His second goal was a similar strike as the ball went towards him in the box and he positioned himself in the air properly to nail it once again with the right foot.

5) Werder Bremen

On any given day, this group can cut through any teams defense in a heartbeat. They stayed right on Inter Milan for the entire match and earned a crucial point in Italy. Claudio Pizzaro got his former boss Jose Mourinho's attention with the equalizer.

With the likes of Diego, Torsten Frings, and Markus Rosenberg, Werder can turn some heads in this competition.

4) Sergio Leonel Aguero

On the scoresheet once again with a fabulous goal. Maxi Rodriguez sent a floater into the box which Aguero looked up at. He controlled it with a gentle touch, cut to the right, and drilled a low shot by Steve Mandanda.

Three goals in two CL matches. Is this the year of Sergio Aguero?

3) Lionel Messi

It was a tough pill to swallow for Shakhtar Donetsk. Up 1-0, then down 2-1 in a span of about seven minutes. Lionel Messi can do that to you, and the last thing you want to give him is a tap-in—which was the first goal.

In the fourth minute of injury time, Messi chipped the ball cleverly over Andriy Pyatov to silence the Ukraine faithful.

2) Atletico Madrid

This team is for real. Being overshadowed by Real Madrid and Barcelona isn't going to slow them down. Liverpool will have all they can handle in a duo for the top spot in Group D.

Can Atletico bury their former striker, Fernando Torres, and Liverpool?

1) CFR Cluj-Napoca

"Verdict: No-hopers. Qualification for the knock-out rounds is a pipe dream."

The words of the so-called Soccernet experts in their Champions League preview of the Romanian squad. Well, two games in, and they've defeated Roma and tied Chelsea. I'd say the Railwaymen are looking extremely hopeful for a birth past the group stages.

Last year it was Fenerbahce that surprised many. Perhaps this year it will be CFR-Cluj.
