College Football Proves Davids Can Beat Goliaths
College Football, at least in my opinion, is more thrilling than the NFL.
Sure, there are some upsets in the NFL, most notably Super Bowl 42. Although that got a lot of press, it wasn't enough to rattle the NFL world.
The common person was just like, "Wow...Eli has emerged and found his place." In college, when a subpar team beats a ranked team, it shakes the Top 25 and the school body as a whole.
For instance, last week when Ole Miss beat Florida 31-30 in "The Swamp," fans and players were distraught. As were Wisconsin fans, USC fans, Georgia fans, and a host of others.
Looking at the AP poll the following day, we saw every key loss was at least an eight-spot drop from the original ranking. USC dropped to No. 9, Florida to No. 12, and the list went down with better teams ranked lower.
This is what makes college football: rivalries, hate, and eternal glory. When an underdog completely knocks out the crowd, the other team knows it has to win over its fans the next week.
Last year was a perfect example of underdogs pulling off the improbable, like Appalachian State over Michigan in Ann Arbor. That loss started the chain of powerhouses losing that year.
These losses also shake up bowl games, like when West Virginia lost to Pittsburgh, it nearly cost them a bid to play in one of the games.
These games are so amazing to watch, because weak colleges can make it big in the game, and later on, maybe even make it big in a movie production.
NCAA football is far more exciting. When the most heated rivalries are going and the crowd is shouting, it's hard to keep up with on the opposing bench.
The teams that can maintain composure, make the key plays, will usually end up on top, regardless of how bad the team is. These games, these moments define college football now, and often years later when you look at how a powerhouse fell apart, a prime example being Michigan.
The absence of their legendary coach, Lloyd Carr, led them to four losses last season, and they have already matched that this season.
College ball is better and more entertaining to watch because of the thrills and ranking system that changes on a weekly basis.
