Roy Jones Will Get Pounded by Average Russian Denis Lebedev in Moscow

Colin LinneweberMar 29, 2011

Former heavyweight titlist Roy Jones, Jr is scheduled to fight Russian boxer Denis Lebedev May 22 at the Megasport Arena in Moscow, Russia.

Jones (54-7, 40 KO), who has lost three of his last five bouts in decisive fashion, said he is not concerned about critics who call for his retirement.

"Don't worry about those folks," said Jones, 42, who became the first past middleweight champ to win a heavyweight crown in more than a century when he defeated Metheun’s John Ruiz by a unanimous decision in March 2003. "I ignore everybody except God."

Jones said he is familiar and impressed with the 31-year-old Lebedev (21-1, 16 KOs), whose only loss came via controversial decision in a December world title bout against Marco Huck in Germany.

"He's left-handed, he's a very strong puncher, but he's straight up," said Jones, who also captured belts in the middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. "I don't fight jokes fights. I won't waste my time for a joke. If I'm gonna fight, I want to fight the best. If I can't fight the best, I don't want to fight."

Jones, named "Fighter of the Decade" for the 1990s by the Boxing Writers Association of America, was a pugilistic legend and one of the most physically gifted athletes in the annals of prizefighting.

Sadly, "Junior" is now a sham and liability in the squared circle fighting strictly for monetary reasons.

"Jones is only in it for the money," said Mike Cappiello, a native of Brockton who once fought for the IBO super featherweight title and retired with an impressive mark of 33-6. "He has nothing else to fall back on."

Jones is stubborn and delusional and he has taught himself to actually believe his own deceits.

"Money ain't always the issue," Jones said, despite his well-documented financial woes. "I never thought about going to Russia, but actually I have some young amateur fighters in Russia that I talk to on Skype and they're really, really big fans of mine. They were like, 'Please come over here and fight. Just one time.' So after that, it made me start thinking about it."

Jones “should start thinking about” the realization he hasn't possessed genuine ring skills since the end of George W. Bush's inaugural term in office.

The 1988 silver medalist was once an exceptional talent who is currently a pathetic story that could end tragically.

Now Jones is a man who ignores “everybody except God.”

Therefore, the once brilliant Junior will woefully hang up his gloves a battered mess like so many of his average peers.
