WWE Wrestemania 27:10 Burning Questions Heading into Sunday Night's Pay Per View
The card is set. The hype is nearly over. The generic pop singer is warming up to perform, and every Superstar booked to appear is getting ready for the single biggest yearly event promoted by Vince McMahon.
Yes, WrestleMania 27 is upon us, and as fans all over the world prepare for the spectacle that will unfold in Atlanta, we the pro wrestling writers, are hard at work.
Providing analysis, predictions, and up to the minute coverage, it is our busiest time of year. Much like the retailer at Christmas, we are doing our part to celebrate the event on a professional level, yet we are also ready to simply just enjoy the show.
So, in the interest of business, and just for fun, here are 10 burning questions concerning the "Grandaddy of them all," WrestleMania 27.
Will Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes Be Rey's Last WrestleMania Match?
1 of 10
Recent rumors concerning Rey's present status and potential future with WWE have been running rampant.
Did he ask for his release from the company? Has his ego really gotten the best of him, causing the top brass in WWE to contemplate life without the two-time World Champion?
Rey has stated that these rumors have no merit, and that as long as he is physically able, he sees himself in good shape to go for years more.
But, to paraphrase Sting when he first wore the black and white paint, "the only thing for sure is, nothing's for sure."
We as fans only know what we're told. Despite how many "inside sources" may be lurking in the proverbial shadows of a WWE locker room, Rey Mysterio and Vince McMahon are the only two guys who know the truth behind these rumors.
We do know the facts, however, and the facts are that Rey is 36, has lost a half step in the ring, and could potentially be upstaged by Sin Cara, the man who many feel was actually brought in to replace Rey when the time comes for him to leave.
Rey's current contract is reportedly expiring this August, and if he hangs it up, or heads elsewhere, the next time we see him during WrestleMania weekend could be the night before, when he is inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Why Should We Care About the 8 Man Tag Match Involving the Corre?
2 of 10
Since June of 2010, Wade Barrett's name has been on the lips of wrestling fans all over the world. At the helm of Nexus, the most controversial faction since the original DX, Barrett was praised by many for his natural ability in the ring, and his imminent rise to main event status was not in question.
Fast forward nine months later, and Barrett is the newly crowned Intercontinental Champion, his road to the WWE Title perhaps not as clear as before, but still a distinct future possibility. His faction, however, has been splintered, as he is now a member of The Corre.
The constant domination of the RAW roster by Nexus was ground to a halt, and now The Corre is, well, competing on SmackDown. One of the biggest storylines that WWE has run in years didn't really go anywhere, and we're left with two stables that are doing anything but dominating either program.
So, at the last minute, we now have the aforementioned Corre taking on the unlikely team of Vladimir Kozlov, Santino Marella, Big Show, and Kane.
Assuming that this match was thrown in at the zero hour for the sake of not leaving out two former World Champions, which I guess makes sense, I am left with the question posed above.
Why should I care? Is anything important going to come from this match happening, any big spots fans will be talking about the next day? Will Show pull an nWo angle and turn on his teammates, joining the Corre, arms raised above a motionless Kane at the end? Or, is this simply for giggles, as we saw Kane doing the silly trumpet celebration during RAW last Monday?
A frivolous, unnecessary match at WrestleMania. Reminds me of that stupid sumo match between Akebono, and...uh oh. Yeah, we may be in trouble here.
How Fast Will Daniel Bryan Get Pinned in His Match with Sheamus?
3 of 10
Okay, before anyone points the accusatory finger in my direction, let me say that I know what you're thinking.
"Oh no, not another writer who believes that Bryan has been underutilized since he came to WWE, has a nonexistent gimmick, and despite his recent run with the United States Title, still jobs more than he should ever have to."
Well, yeah. That's me.
But, it's okay, I have learned to accept all of that, and I am moving on. So, instead of breaking down this match from start to finish, I choose to simply focus on the end result.
So, what do you think? How soon into the match will they take it home and Bryan does the job for Sheamus? I say about eight minutes. That is about enough time for me to get sufficiently frustrated at the situation, and will probably be ready for it to end anyway.
Then again, I could be wrong. This match has the potential to be very good. There is some history between them, both guys can work, though I believe Sheamus is not on the same level as Bryan, and this is WrestleMania after all. Perhaps the match itself will be above par, exciting and dramatic, with WWE creative coming to its senses and giving Bryan the win on the grandest stage of them all. This could very well be the breakout performance of Daniel Bryan's career.
So, I got eight minutes. Any takers?
How Will Snooki Look in Her First WWE Match?
4 of 10
The breakout star of MTV's Jersey Shore will be in her first ever match, teaming with Diva Legend Trish Stratus, and John Morrison against Dolph Ziggler, LayCool, and Vickie Guerrero.
Yeah, okay, I got nothing for this one. A grown woman who calls herself "Snooki", has no connection with the business, and I'm supposed to be happy that she's in a match at WrestleMania.
Moving on...
Will the Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole Match Be Successful?
5 of 10
This is an interesting one for me.
A lot of work has been put into heeling out Michael Cole, from his supposed dislike of Daniel Bryan, to his role as the anonymous GM's mouthpiece, all the way to now, with his man crush on The Miz. The tension between he and Lawler has been building the entire time, and it has now reached its apex.
No one can argue that Cole has embraced the role, perhaps even more than he should, as some online reports say that his ego is a bit out of control. He has the hatred of the fans, not only for his association with Miz, but for his words against Bryan, and especially Lawler and his family.
But, he also has the contempt of the fans because of the seat that he sits in every week on TV.
Yes, WWE felt it was time to transition Jim Ross to an off air role, and yes, he seems fairly comfortable with his place in the company now. Things change in this business. That's how it is.
But, for a lot of fans, Michael Cole will always be Sammy Hagar. He's good. He's entertaining. But, he's no David Lee Roth.
Lawler, of course, has nothing to prove to anyone, and is seemingly always the guy thrown into the ring when the need arises.
There is little doubt that Ross will probably call this match. There is also little doubt that if Cole wins, his unusual push as a heel play by play man will do nothing but get even bigger. The question is, win or lose, what will RAW look like...more importantly, sound like...the next night?
Will Christian Cost Edge the World Heavyweight Title?
6 of 10
Edge defends the World Heavyweight Title against Alberto Del Rio, and there is a good possibility that the fresh face in WWE will take home the gold. Why?
One word. Christian.
Since the moment Christian returned to WWE from TNA, fans have been salivating at the possibility of a reunion between the two "brothers," and now it's finally happened.
It is like old times, seeing these two guys in the same ring again, and I have to say I love reminiscing.
But, the past is the past, and while their recent pairing has been a nice stroll down memory lane, the fact remains that these two cannot inhabit the same space for too long without one of them turning on the other. That is the case with Kane and Undertaker, it was the case between Triple H and Shawn Michaels until their last DX reunion, and it is the case with Edge and Christian.
What better way to put over Christian as the big time player that everyone wants him to be? By turning on Edge, and either costing him the World Title, or helping him win, only to turn on him after the match, Christian will undoubtedly be thrust into that position.
Edge has always been known as the turncoat of this particular team Canada, but never forget that Christian has done this before. He turned on Sting in TNA back in 2006, costing him the NWA World Heavyweight Title.
So, the old adage about what is past is present...is that the case now?
When Will Vince McMahon Buy Out TNA and Shut It Down?
7 of 10
Yeah, okay, this has nothing to do with WrestleMania 27. But, seriously, anyone been watching TNA lately?
Pick up the phone, Vince, let's make this happen.
Will Randy Orton vs. CM Punk Steal the Show?
8 of 10
Despite the buzz over the two big main events this year, Orton and Punk could quite possibly end up being the best match on the card.
For my money, these two are the best workers currently on the RAW roster. They are young, hungry, both in their prime, with a lifetime ahead of them in the business.
Orton's heat with Punk dates way back when Punk was still face and Orton was heel. The fact that their feud was rekindled, with each man playing the other's former role is a testament to how skilled they both are at getting over with their respective characters.
Punk, as the leader of The Nexus, has been a smiling, self-righteous wicked antagonist. He is hell bent on topping the man whom he feels is out of control, and cost him the World Heavyweight Championship back in 2008.
Orton, thriving in his current role as WWE's antihero, has been a steely eyed threat to Punk's Nexus, eliminating them one by one in recent weeks.
Truth be told, I couldn't quite understand why this would happen, it's not as if Orton needs to be put over anymore in this feud. Then there's also the fact that this newest incarnation of Nexus lasted all of 10 minutes until Punk took over, and suddenly they're all shelved.
But if it means that this match goes on interrupted, with the focus being squarely placed on these two dynamic in ring performers, I for one say, good. Let's do this.
Will The Rock Cost John Cena the WWE Title?
9 of 10
Lot of buzz on this match, and with good reason.
In March of 2008, John gave the now infamous interview to the Sun newspaper, in which he blasted The Rock for not truly loving the business. Cena correctly pointed out that being associated with sports entertainment would not help Rock's career as an actor, so he would not come back for any reason.
To be honest, though I am not exactly John's biggest fan, he was dead on about his comments.
Now, of course, Rock is back, at least for the moment, and will be the host for WrestleMania 27. And what better way to bring him back than do what WWE does best–bring real life heat into the storyline.
So, following weeks of promos cut by John, in the ring, and Rock, live via satellite, the two finally had a face-to-face confrontation on the March 28 edition of RAW. The crowd loved it, as they're supposed to, and the excitement surrounding this match is palpable.
Of course, Cena is not working Rock. He is working The Miz. Remember that guy?
While Miz runs the risk of being lost in the shuffle, he is still in the main event at WrestleMania, so no tears will be shed for him. But the real story here is the fact that Cena gave Rock his finisher, seemingly setting it up for Cena to lose on Sunday.
Despite who goes over in this match, the real winners are the fans. It's WrestleMania, it's Cena, and it's The Rock, and two things are certain in this scenario.
One–both guys, love them or hate them, are what WWE is all about. Big talk, big action, and over the top characters to go along with it.
Two–while Rock may stay another week, or another month, he will eventually be gone again. If John is asked to lay down, putting off the WWE Title for a while longer, and make Rock look good in the process, then he will do it. John is all business. And business will be good on Sunday night.
Will Wrestlemania 27 See the End of the Undertaker's Streak?
10 of 10
This is it. The big one. No titles. No celebrities. No cars, or smiles, or funny catchphrases, just two of the best the business has ever seen going head to head in the main event. This is what it's all about.
While the hype around this match is only a few weeks old, it is still huge, and thanks to each man doing his part to put this event over, the stakes have perhaps never been higher for WrestleMania.
This truly feels like the end.
Hunter has stated that he will die trying to end the streak. It's the last thing left for him to do, the final mountain for him to climb.
Undertaker's character is committed to the WrestleMania streak, and is defiantly confident that he will prevail on Sunday night.
Like two aging gunfighters in a classic showdown at high noon, Hunter and 'Taker are indeed the last of a dying breed. Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, hands by their holsters, staring each other down on opposite ends of a dusty road in town. Who wins that epic gunfight?
At the end of the day, this is not what a lot of fans wanted. It is not Sting, the mysterious stranger in town, standing across the ring from Undertaker. Shawn Michaels had two classic duels the past two years, and rode off into the sunset defeated.
Instead, the man standing in the way of 'Taker's immortality is Triple H, the weathered Marshal whose reputation is as tough and hard nosed as the outlaw he's facing.
To put it another way, who else was going to work the guy?
This is WrestleMania. Triple H and Undertaker know how to deliver, they have been doing it for years. They will do it again on Sunday.
