Weekend Boxing Recap: Yuriorkis Gamboa and a 'KO of the Year' Candidate

First LastJun 7, 2018

One month away from Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley, and boxing fans already already have had a worthwhile amount of fights to keep them busy.

Fighters featured during this past weekend included Cuban Olympians Yuriorkis Gamboa and Erislandy Lara, Mexican prospect Miguel Garcia, top-10 heavyweight Alexander Dimitrenko and a Russian champion in Dmitry Pirog.

Storylines to come out of the week include undefeated records being broken, redemption fights and a Knockout of the Year candidate.

Video is also included for Dmitrenko vs. Sosnowski. It is a knockout you don't want to miss.

Alexander Dimitrenko Gets Big KO over Sosnowski

1 of 6

Alexander Dimitrenko (31-1, 21 KO) fought 11 close and competitive rounds of boxing against Albert Sosnowski (46-4-1) before landing a brutal uppercut to end the fight in the final round.

The knockout is sure to be a Knockout of the Year candidate, and it was definitely the most vicious so far.

Dimitrenko continues to move up the heavyweight rankings with the win, and future bouts with the Klitschko brothers are sure to be on his agenda down the line.

The 6'7" fighter from Hamburg, Germany has a massive 83-inch reach and is one of the more physically imposing heavyweights out there.

This is the storyline of the month for the most part, especially on Friday Night Fights.

Erislandy Lara (15-0-1) and Carlos Molina (17-4-1) fought to a majority draw during the main event of FNF Friday evening. Molina seemed to be in control going to the scorecards, but two judges had the bout scored 85-85 in the end.

With that, the 27-year-old remains undefeated.

Another undefeated record that was on the line was Miguel Angel Garcia's (25-0), who defeated Matt Remillard (23-1) in the co-main event of HBO Boxing After Dark. Remillard retired before the 11th round after 10 lopsided rounds.

Cuban Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa hit 20-0 with his fourth-round knockout win over Jorge Solis (40-3-2). Solis had only been finished once before when he was knocked out by Manny Pacquiao in the eight round of their 2007 bout.

Dmitry Pirog (18-0, 14 KO) defeated Javier Francisco Maciel (18-2) after 12 rounds of boxing in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

It wasn't as spectacular as his fifth-round knockout of Daniel Jacobs last July, but it was a solid performance nonetheless.

The scorecards read 115-111, 115-112 and 117-111.

Pirog retains his WBO middleweight title with the victory and looks to fight the best the division has to offer, including middleweight kingpin and pound-for-pound star Sergio Martinez (47-2-2).

Jorge Paez Jr. Gets Revenge Against Jose Luis Castillo

4 of 6

Over 11 years ago, Jose Luis Castillo defeated Jorge Paez Jr.'s father in the fifth round of their super-featherweight bout.

This time, it was Paez Jr.'s chance to get the win over the Mexican. He did so with a 10-round decision victory over the 37-year-old.

Castillo had called for his retirement in 2010, but returned shortly after to win twice. With this loss, his official retirement should soon be determined.

Should Erislandy Lara Still Be Undefeated?

My scorecard read 96-94 for Carlos Molina (17-4-2) in his 10-round light middleweight bout against Erislandy Lara (15-0-1).

The official scorecards read 97-93 for Molina, 95-95 and 95-95, resulting in a majority draw. Just a few weeks ago, Ismayl Syllakh (15-0) defeated Cuban Olympian Yordanis Despaigne, (8-1) giving him the first professional loss of his career.

The trend almost continued for the month with upsets against Cuban Olympians, but Lara escaped with the draw and his "perfect" record.

One Cuban Olympic gold medalist was able to give a performance that is worth talking about.

Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16 KO) got the biggest win of his professional career when he stopped Jorge Solis (40-3-2) in the fourth round of their featherweight bout for the WBA title. The fight aired live on HBO Boxing After Dark.

With the victory, Gamboa takes one big step forward in searching for the mega-fight between himself and Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27 KO). The managers of both fighters are taking the right steps in building it up to be one of the biggest fights in boxing.

Lopez will first have to make it past Orlando Salido (34-11-2) on April 16. Gamboa fought Salido to a close decision victory in September. We'll just have to wait and see if Lopez can outdo him.
