UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones Weigh-In Results and Reaction

Jordy McElroyMar 18, 2011

The UFC held its official weigh-in at Amerihealth Pavilion at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Friday in preparation for Saturday's UFC 128 event, which features the blockbuster light heavyweight championship bout between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Jon Jones.

Coming off his UFC 113 drubbing of former champion Lyoto Machida, Shogun will be defending his newly acquired light heavyweight title for the first time. A knee injury and surgery has kept the former Chute Boxe cadet sidelined for nearly a year.

Despite the time off, Shogun vows to be in optimum shape and ready to derail the Jones hype train.

"I think Jones is a great fighter. He has a lot of experience, but this belt is mine, and it will keep being mine," Shogun said.

Shogun better be in optimum shape and then some. Jones is proving to be every bit as good as hyped up to be. His destruction of light heavyweights Ryan Bader, Brandon Vera, Matt Hamill, and Vladimir Matyushenko was astounding.

Against Shogun, he faces the toughest opponent in his young career.

"I feel great. This is the biggest opportunity of my life," said Jones, who was fired up when he stepped on the scale. "I'm definitely going to execute the situation."

There is talk that Jones has been signing autographs with 'UFC Light Heavyweight Champion' next to his name. Whether fans see this as an act of confidence or blatant disrespect, Shogun seems to lean towards the latter.

"I really see it as disrespectful, even though he's confident, but tomorrow we'll see who's the better man," said Shogun.

In the co-main event, "The California Kid" Urijah Faber makes his anticipated UFC debut against dangerous slugger Eddie Wineland. A win over Wineland puts Faber in great position to challenge bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.

UFC 128 will air live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT). Fans can watch the first batch of free preliminary bouts on the UFC's Facebook page at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT). The next pair of free prelims will air live on SpikeTV at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT).
