WWE Breaking News: WGN America Cancels WWE Superstars

Graham GSM MatthewsMar 17, 2011

While doing my nightly pro wrestling news search online, I came across a shocking turn of events that literally has come out of nowhere.

Better yet, it has been anticipated and suspected for the last two years.

What exactly am I talking about you ask? According to a possible reliable source on LordsofPain.net, Thursday's WWE Superstars broadcast has officially been cancelled. Here's the official story:

"Chad Ruffner sent an e-mail to WGN America concerning replays of WWE Superstars. The e-mail response noted the following here:

"Our final airing of 'WWE Superstars' is Thursday, April 7."

According to ProWrestling.net, WGN America confirmed that WWE Superstars has been canceled. Additional information was not provided.

WWE Superstars debuted on April 16, 2009."

GSM's Thoughts

As it states, the original report traces back to ProWrestling.net, which in my book is indeed a reliable source. Nonetheless, what wrestling fan who knows the business did not expect this?!

Since it's downfall basically at the end of 2009, critics of the IWC has foreshadowed its cancellation due to its minimal viewer-ship, lack of wrestling and location on an unpopular network.

The show started out strong following WrestleMania 25, being billed as a program where "anything can happen." The debut featured talent such as Christian, Shane McMahon and even the Undertaker.

However, as the show progressed throughout the year, we went from ECW and United States Championship matches, appearances by John Cena and Triple H, to where feuds were fueled by seeing the same jobbers every week, the same matches and the less and less wrestling.

The only surprising part is that WGN America has decided to not renew the show, or has finally realized the show's unimportance with declining ratings lower than TNA's and has done it out of nowhere.

In my opinion, it's a shame that WWE cares even less about this show than they do about WWE NXT, but I guess we all knew from the beginning that this renewal of a classic show would never live up to the original.

For the few people who actually watch the program, myself included, I miss writing reviews for a show that was never really taken seriously. I also find it depressing that this show barely even lasted 100 episodes.

Well, one things is for sure—about damn time.
