Tuesday Morning Running Back Week 4: Favre, The Titans, and The Cardinal D.

Dan PieroniSep 30, 2008

What a second, old man Favre did what?

I didn't think he had it in him!

Apparently you can teach an old dog new tricks.

In a game personified by shoddy defense and arena-football-like scoring, Brett Favre finally arrived in the big apple, torching the Cardinals' defense for 289 yards and six, that's right, I said six, touchdown passes, setting a career high in the process

Perhaps the most heroic thing about this surprising but yet delightful performance is that he did it on a sore ankle, leading me to question whether the Jets are that good or the Cardinal defense is that bad?

Here's a couple more surprising facts from the game: No one scored until the second quarter, and maybe it was those hideous New York Titans uniforms the Jets were wearing that gave Favre the power to throw a career high six TDs in one game.

Lost in the shuffle of Favre's accomplishment is a rather scary moment at the end of the game.

Cardinal wideout Anquan Boldin was carted off the field after a scary helmet-to-helmet collision with Jet safety Eric Smith and taken to a New York hospital.

The good news is he was moving his arms and talking to teammates as he left the field, so maybe his injuries are not as bad as first thought.

Now to recap another wild weekend in the NFL, here come the bullet points.

  • I pity the poor Bengals. There offense is absolutely pathetic. You would think a guy from Harvard would have the brains to figure out the offensive woes of his team, but even he can't help them.
  • No Jeremy Shockey and no Marques Colston did not mean a problem for Drew Brees. He was still to shred the 'Niners' defense by throwing the deep ball to Lance Moore.
  • Even though the 49er's have given up 95 points in the last three games, they should still find solace in the fact that their next opponent is Matt Cassel.
  • I've come to the conclusion that the Falcons are not the same team on the road. 2/11 on third down is not going to get it done against any team.
  • Give credit to Panther's coach John Fox, in suspending Steve Smith, he seemed to unify the team, and that unity was obvious when Smith high-fived Ken Lucas after a touchdown in Sunday's win.
  • Maybe the Broncos do have a great offense, but their defense leaves much to be desired. Sunday was the first time they had given up 30 points in three-straight games since 1986.
  • Proving I'm an idiot at times, the Chiefs did not get desperate and look for replacement players as I suggested last week, and pulled out a victory anyway behind the power running of Larry Johnson.
  • Great line by NBC's Dan Patrick on Sunday night. He said the guys in Brett Favre's Wrangler commercials played better defense than the Cardinals on Sunday.
  • The Titans are 4-0 for the first time in franchise history, although I think Justin Gage was down on the fourth-down play that led to the go-ahead touchdown.
  • Whoops of the weeks goes to the Texans' special-teams unit who were fooled by the Jaguars in a fake punt formation with no punter on the field. Maybe the oppressive heat in Jacksonville had an effect on them.
  • So far the most clutch player in the NFL this year has been the Jaguars' Josh Scobee. It isn't often you hit game-winning field goals with seconds left on back-to-back weeks.
  • From the "Hollywood could have scripted this game" file, Buccaneer K Matt Bryant kicked a game-winning field goal just a few days after losing his three-month-old son to cancer. Another fine example of a player rising to the occasion while playing through grief.
  • Maybe the Rams could use a new quarterback and defense. At least they took my advice and canned Scott Linehan and now have themselves an experienced coach in Jim Haslet.
  • Raise your hand if you thought at the beginning of the season that the Bills and Titans would still be undefeated after Week Four. .............. It's okay, I'll wait, ............... Come on, someone had to believe it, ............. I guess there are no takers, much like I thought.
  • You know you're desperate to make an impression on your boss when you tell your kicker to try a 76-yard field goal, as Lane Kiffin did on Sunday.
  • I find it disgraceful that Al Davis would go so far as to interview three potential successors to Lane Kiffin without actually firing him. But then again, this is the same Al Davis who brought an anti-trust suit against the NFL so he could move the Raiders to Los Angeles, it isn't surprising.
  • A little more confidence for Jason Campbell has gone a long way for the Redskins. You don't go into Irving and manhandle the Cowboys defense like that on a normal Sunday. Hail to the Redskins!
  • Hail to the Bears, too. It isn't often that you stop a guy as bull-headed as Buckhalter at the goal line on the final play of the game.
  • Happy trails to Matt Millen, no longer public enemy No. 1 for Lions fans. This was the least surprising executive firing in sports since Dan Duquette. Maybe Millen will go back to broadcasting; he had a knack for that.
  • Speaking of happy trails, happy trails to you my fans, until we meet again, next week.
