Miguel Cotto Defeats Ricardo Mayorga, Pawel Wolak Upsets Yuri Foreman
Miguel "Angel" Cotto (36-2) returned tonight to defeat dangerous slugger Ricardo Mayorga (29-8-1) in an entertaining fight at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight was stopped in the last round of the 12-round light middleweight bout after Mayorga injured his hand.
Cotto easily won and was ahead by a wide margin going into the last round. Mayorga clowned around as usual and put himself on the ropes, demanding Cotto to engage with him in a slugfest. Cotto fought diligently and smart with accurate body shots and hooks.
Cotto's face did show some bruises from the few times he decided to brawl with the wild fighter from Nicaragua, but he was never in any real danger.
In the co-main event of the evening, Yuri Foreman (28-1) took on Pawel Wolak (28-1) in a 10-round light middleweight fight. Foreman was last seen losing on a ninth-round technical knockout to Miguel Cotto in June. Things didn't get easier for the fighter born in Belarus.
Wolak came out fast and had early success pressuring the Rabbi-turned boxer. Wolak landed 30 of 60 power punches in the very first round. He had success with his right hand for the majority of the first three rounds as Foreman neglected to stand on the outside and box.
Through three rounds, Wolak outlanded Foreman 124 to 57 in CompuBox punches.
Wolak stunned Foreman in the fourth round with a body shot but ran out of time before he could capitalize. Wolak easily won the first six rounds with relentless pressure and accurate power shots.
Foreman retired in his corner before the bell for the seventh round. He nows drops to 29-2 with back-to-back losses.
The first bout of the evening featured IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vasquez and undefeated fighter Leonardo Zappavinga. Vasquez won a unanimous decision with the scores 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111, giving Zappaving the first loss of his career.
Vasquez (28-3) controlled the bout throughout, outlanding Vasquez with a multitude of jabs over 12 rounds of boxing. Press row had the bout even through six rounds, but the Mexican fighter from Guadalajara took over the second half of the bout and clearly won the last six rounds.
Vasquez, who is a top 10 lightweight, will look for future fights with undefeated star Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios and Humberto Soto.
In the second undercard bout, heavyweight Tommy Zbikowksi improved his record to 2-0 with a knockout win over Richard Bryant. The end came at 1:45 of the very first round.
