WWE SmackDown Review: March 11, 2011

Daniel MasseyMar 12, 2011

Watching SmackDown last week, I was astounded at how good it was in comparison to Raw. The quality was a mile above where it had been in recent weeks, so naturally, I was looking forward to seeing whether they could repeat this high standard of presentation.

It was revealed that Triple H will be on SmackDown to respond to the comments made on Raw by The Undertaker. Great. So he’s going to be doing exactly what the Undertaker did then is he, and wasting everybody’s time with a useless promo? I hoped not, but I had a feeling this was the route they were going to go down.

Edge came out first to an electric crowd in Houston. They weren’t just loud for Edge, either; they were loud all night! It was refreshing to finally hear some reaction to what was taking place in the ring.

Edge cut a decent promo referencing the blood he shed last week (that’s all I’ll say on the matter, as I got my PG bashing out in my Raw review) and called Alberto Del Rio out.

Alberto arrived with Brodus Clay. Edge tried to attack them both, but Brodus just decimated him. I like the way Brodus is being built up as a powerhouse, as it has been a while since we have seen anyone with his body shape in WWE.

Christian came to save the day to a nice pop from the crowd, and Teddy Long announced that Edge will tag with...Christan? I think you mean Christian, Teddy. Holla.

I love the way Booker T got all excited and said “Can you dig that, Sucka?” It amused me.

Kane came out for a match with Wade Barrett, who entered the ring taunting The Big Red Machine, saying he didn’t appreciate what The Corre did for him.

As soon as Kane took control of the action, The Corre rushed the ring to aid their leader. Sorry, I mean their equal. Big Show made them scatter like cockroaches by arriving, wielding a steel chair.

After the commercial break it’s clear that a tag match was set up by Teddy Long – Big Show and Kane vs Heath Slater and Wade Barrett.

I enjoy watching Wade Barrett wrestle as I think he has a good domineering power in the ring. Not many wrestlers have this natural asset. I thought it was a shame when yet again, The Corre came to interfere despite being banned from the ring (apparently).

Big Show was having none of this and again went to retrieve a steel chair. Boom! The impact that the chair made with Ezekiel’s back was mental. It sounded like a rifle crack.

Then he gave Kane a chair shot, presumably as payback for last week. I’d like to see a feud between the Big Show and Kane.

They could even have a spot at WrestleMania this year. Even a 5-10 minute match would be worth it, just to see these two behemoths get it on.

Booker T carried on his comedy role when he asked Cole what went down on Monday night. Booker T grows on me more every week to the point now where I fully enjoy his commentary and I think it fits the show perfectly.

I was extremely pessimistic at first (as I always am...you might have noticed it shining through in my reviews), but now he has had a few weeks to settle down, I think it was the right decision.

Cody Rhodes came out to squash JTG in a match that was purely meant to make Cody look mentally disturbed. He competed in a suit for reasons I cannot fathom. If he ends up with attire like Mankind, I’ll be one shocked wrestling fan.

Cena comes to the ring for an interview with Cole. Why not, eh? Just skip over to SmackDown for an interview, no biggy. They showed Miz’s promo from Raw, which I completely overlooked last week.

I really didn’t think it was worth talking about until everyone commented about it being the greatest promo by the Miz ever, etc.

I’ll talk about it now then. I still don’t think it was a big deal. Fair enough, it was intense and probably made him seem like a bigger threat than he was. He also copied the People’s Elbow. That was it.

Cena said Miz made the biggest mistake of his life by not staying silent and allowing John to be distracted by The Rock.

Cena is angry tonight. He still looks as if he’s about to cry though which is a running theme with his facial expressions. Especially at Breaking Point 2009, when he was being owned by a Singapore Cane.

Cole said the Miz shut Cena up on Monday night and Cena goes to FU Cole. Sorry, I got so excited there I forgot it had been changed to Attitude Adjustment...Swagger rushed the ring to defend Cole, but ended up getting Attitude Adjusted himself. I really can’t wait for Cole to get what is coming to him.

LayCool made their way to the ring so Layla could wrestle Kaitlyn, winner of NXT Season 3, although I wouldn’t have known had Josh Matthews not said anything.

Layla won in about a minute with a neckbreaker. Another pointless Divas match. I’m not having a go at Divas, it’s the way they are booked, they get no time in the ring and when they do, they are demeaned by Cole. I feel sorry for them.

Rey Mysterio and Drew McIntyre wrestled next. McIntyre dominated almost the entire match and was ridiculously aggressive yet again shouting, “I’m going to WrestleMania if I have to cripple everybody!” Rey Mysterio won, however, which I think was a huge mistake.

Now what could Triple H possibly have to say, I hear you ask? Thanks. That was the long and short of it.

He wanted to thank The Undertaker for making the match No Holds Barred as he has no trouble separating emotion from his wrestling.

Also, what is with his T-shirt? He’s worn it like three weeks in a row. Let’s have a change.

I have to say I was extremely disappointed that Edge and Christian didn’t make their entrance together to their old music as they did in the recent game SmackDown vs Raw 2011.

When the match started, it seemed to follow the classic tag match formula, something we haven’t seen in a long time, as Christian was being worn down from quick tags between Brodus and Alberto.

Edge finally got the tag he desperately wanted, but his momentum was crushed by Brodus Clay. He went for the spear but was just flattened by this brute.

Brodus eventually fell victim to the tornado DDT that thwarted him on Monday night, followed by an elbow drop from Edge.

Edge and Christian reigned supreme for the first time in almost 10 years.

Another excellent SmackDown, and again I enjoyed it a lot more than Raw, despite Austin returning!

Please leave comments below! I do my best to reply to all comments that warrant it. Thanks for reading.
