UEFA Champions League: Breaking Down the Final Matchups of the Second Leg

Jon GilbertJun 7, 2018

Four teams are already through to the final eight of the UEFA Champions League, and eight teams are vying to fill the final four spots.

Chelsea F.C. has a decided advantage over Kobenhavn to advance, and Bayern Munich has a 1-0 away result over Internazionale. The matchup between Real Madrid and Lyon and the one between Manchester United and Marseille are tied in the aggregate going into the second leg, with Real Madrid owning an away goal.

The first four matches of the second leg of the round of the 16 provided plenty of excitement. What's going to happen now?

Here is a breakdown for the final four games of the round of 16 for each team.

Real Madrid Have Real Issues Up Front

Since Cristiano Ronaldo pulled a hamstring while recording a hat trick against Malaga a week ago, he hasn't been in action. Real Madrid fans hope he'll be ready for the club's second leg with Lyon.

Real Madrid doesn't have to be overly aggressive, holding an away goal from their 1-1 draw in France. But Lyon will be getting after it, so Los Merengues had better have some attack ready.

Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has said that he won't play his striker unless he is 100 percent ready. Whether or not he can stay true to that stance now that Kaka has been ruled out is unknown. Kaka has water on his knee and won't play the second leg.

Gonzalo Higuain won't be back until April, leaving Karim Benzema with a ton of pressure to get the attack going for Real Madrid.

Could there be an Emmanuel Adebayor sighting?

Lyon Has a Chance at a Shocking Advance

Olympique Lyonnais couldn't have drawn it up much better themselves. They fortunately found an equalizer at home against Real Madrid in the first leg and now head to Spain with a chance to move on.

What makes it all the more plausible are the mounting injury problems for Real Madrid. Having already played mightily in the first leg against a near-full strength Madrid side, Lyon truly has the pressure fully displaced from itself.

Lyon get back striker Lisandro from injury in time for the return leg.

Chelsea Look to Finish off Kobenhavn Without Injury

Chelsea have what should prove to be a very simple return leg in front of them against FC Kobenhavn. The Premier League side dominated the first leg 2-0 and return home looking to protect their lead.

It was Nicolas Anelka scoring twice with Fernando Torres as his frequent partner in attacking crime in the first go-around. Torres is still working to regain world-class form that he lost in the World Cup over the summer.

Chelsea can't be too relaxed but should also keep future matches in mind. Considering the London club's B squad is as good as many A squads in the world, the Blues would be wise to use some of them to avoid injury to key men.

F.C. Kobenhavn Look to Salvage Some Pride After Strong Run

It looks like F.C. Kobenhavn has finally met its Champions League end. The Danish side is not only down 2-0 in the aggregate to Chelsea after one leg but also has two Chelsea away goals against it.

Frankly, it would take a monumental performance by Kobenhavn to overturn the result.

Kobenhavn have plenty to be proud of after impressively finishing second in Group D. The second leg of the round of 16 will be one more chance for them to make their supporters proud.

Manchester United Will Need Big Match from Wayne Rooney

It's become a staple of the Manchester United attack: Nani flies up the right side with the ball, forcing the defense into a scramble to get back into position and mark the United players pushing forward.

Luckily for Marseille, it won't have to deal with that in the second leg of the two clubs' Champions League tie.

Nani has been sidelined for the return leg with a leg injury sustained in a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. United is going to have to find its attack from somewhere else.

Getting Dimitar Berbatov going, who is scoreless in the tournament phase, would be a huge boost. But most of the pressure will fall on Wayne Rooney to elevate United from its 0-0 aggregate into the next round.

Marseille Must Be Prepared for a More Open Contest in Second Leg

MARSEILLE, FRANCE - FEBRUARY 23: Steve Mandanda of Marseille claims the ball under a challenge by Wayne Rooney of Manchester United during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg match between Marseille and Manchester United at the Stade Velodrom

Olympique de Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda extended his streak of not giving up a Champions League goal to more than 500 minutes with a clean sheet in the first leg against Manchester United.

Extending the streak much further could be difficult.

The first leg was a tactical affair that saw neither team create consistently dangerous moves. That should change in the second leg with both teams searching for the breakthrough.

Mandanda should expect more to be asked of him in the return leg in England.

Bayern Munich Must Protect Its Narrow Lead

It's amazing how much difference Mario Gomez's last-gasp goal in the first leg of Bayern Munich's Champions League tie with Inter Milan makes. That 90th-minute goal gave Bayern the 1-0 decision, and the German side now has a strong hold on advancement.

The competition returns to Germany with Bayern looking to protect that lead against one of the most skilled teams in all the world.

There has been distraction over manager Louis van Gaal's future with the club due to domestic struggles. It has been confirmed, however, that he will step down after the season. Advancing to the last eight would be a good way to send him off.

Inter Milan Will Have to Offset Loss of Diego Milito

Internazionale will be without star striker Diego Milito for the return leg against Bayern Munich due to a nagging thigh injury. With the Italian side needing a convincing result in Germany, the loss of Milito doesn't bode well.

Inter must win by a two-goal margin to advance or at least win 1-0 to force a penalty shootout.

The Nerazzurri could use Samuel Eto'o as a lone front man and push its midfielders forward with more frequency, or manager Leonardo could use Giampaolo Pazzini to bolster the attack.

No matter what the strategy, it needs to pay off in a big way to push the defending champs through to the last eight.
