WWE Hall of Fame: 10 Active Superstars Headed for the Hall
The WWE Hall of Fame is a fairly comprehensive, yet sometimes controversial, celebration of the greatest superstars ever to step foot in a WWE ring.
Shawn Michaels will headline a 2011 class that officially features "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, "Bullet" Bob Armstrong, and Sunny, and is rumored to also include Abdullah the Butcher.
The focus of late has been on the youth of the WWE, but this piece will take a look at 10 current WWE superstars who may see their names join the likes of Andre the Giant, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, and Mr. Perfect in the WWE Hall of Fame.
The Miz
1 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
WWE Champion (current), two-time United States Champion, five-time Tag Team Champion, Money in the Bank winner (2010)
The Miz is the most speculative of the 10 superstars on this list, but at only 30 years old, the current WWE Champion is on his way to an incredibly successful career.
His devotion to the business may be what ultimately lands The Miz amongst the greats in pro wrestling history. He gives basically everything he has to the WWE, something John Cena also did to earn his spot at the top of the proverbial heap.
If The Miz continues to give it all to Vince McMahon's company, he may be in position to become the next face of WWE, and a future Hall of Famer.
CM Punk
2 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
Three-time World Heavyweight Champion, one-time ECW Champion, one-time Intercontinental Champion, one-time World Tag Team Champion, two-time Money in the Bank winner (2008, 2009), one of 22 WWE Triple Crown winners
There are 22 men in WWE history who have won the Triple Crown—winning a world title, Intercontinental title, and tag team title in your career—and of the 21 other winners, 15 are either already in the Hall of Fame or almost certainly headed there.
CM Punk may make it 16.
Widely regarded as one of the best heels in the company, and widely praised by the Internet Wrestling Community, Punk has quietly put together a serious list of accomplishments in less than five years on WWE's main roster.
Age plays a big factor in the upward trajectory of Punk's potential. At 32, Punk is hitting his prime as a professional wrestler. The only thing potentially standing between Punk and the Hall of Fame is WWE creative—Punk hasn't held a world championship, and has been largely absent from the title race, since 2009.
Hard work pays off in the end, and the performances Punk puts on week to week shouldn't go unnoticed by WWE creative.
Kane
3 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
One-time World Heavyweight Champion, one-time WWE Champion, one-time ECW Champion, two-time Intercontinental Champion, 10-time Tag Team Champion, one-time Hardcore Champion, Money in the Bank winner (2010), one of 10 WWE Grand Slam winners, one of 22 Triple Crown winners
When you talk about some of the most accomplished big men in WWE history, the discussion simply cannot exclude The Big Red Monster.
Aside from his stellar record of championships won, Kane is one of the most prolific Royal Rumble performers in WWE history. His 11 eliminations in 2001 are the most in one Royal Rumble match in history, and his 37 career eliminations are second only to Shawn Michaels.
Time is often not the friend of most pro wrestlers, but Kane has withstood the test. The Kane character debuted all the way back in 1997, and despite a few changes, still remains largely intact to this day.
The Hall of Fame may get a bit more evil in the next few years if and when Kane is given WWE's highest honor.
Big Show
4 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
Two-time WWE Champion, one-time ECW Champion, one-time United States Champion, seven-time Tag Team Champion, three-time Hardcore Champion
Whether or not he likes the comparison, Big Show may very well be this generation's Andre the Giant. And as far as championships go, Big Show is the more decorated of the two.
Big Show is a spectacle in and of himself, and the WWE Universe loves to see the big man at any live event.
His championship résumé is nothing to shake your head at, either. Big Show is the only man in professional wrestling history to hold the WWE, WCW and ECW World Heavyweight Championship.
If you are world championship material in every major company you wrestle in, you must be something special. Big Show certainly is that, and is likely headed to the Hall sooner than later.
Rey Mysterio
5 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
Two-time World Heavyweight Champion, two-time Intercontinental Champion, three-time Cruiserweight Champion, four-time Tag Team Champion, 2006 Royal Rumble winner, one of 22 WWE Triple Crown winners, one of 22 WWE Triple Crown winners
Rey Mysterio gave the little guy a chance in pro wrestling. While it may be quite a while before we see another truly small wrestler make it to the top of the WWE Universe, Mysterio showed it can be done.
Mysterio did plenty of work in WWE, compiling quite the résumé in the process, but he also earned a number of accolades before arriving on the WWE scene. Mysterio is already a Hall of Famer in Mexico, earning the honor from AAA, one of Mexico's premier pro wrestling companies.
If you believe Internet reports, Mysterio may be hanging up his wrestling boots much sooner than later. If that is the case, it likely won't be long before he joins his good friend, the late Eddie Guerrero, in the WWE Hall of Fame.
John Cena
6 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
Seven-time WWE Champion, two-time World Heavyweight Champion, three-time United States Champion, four-time Tag Team Champion, 2008 Royal Rumble winner
The current face of WWE is almost certainly headed of the Hall of Fame when his career comes to an end.
Cena is one of the most decorated world champions in WWE history. He may become a 10-time world champion next month at WrestleMania XXVII, when he competes in the main event on the Grandest Stage of Them All for the seventh consecutive year.
He is often portrayed as the most polarizing figure in WWE history, yet another pseudo-accolade to add to Cena's already loaded list.
If Cena raises the WWE Championship on April 3, it likely won't be the last time. Cena is only 33, which means we will likely see many more world title reigns for John Cena before he takes his place in the WWE Hall of Fame.
Randy Orton
7 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
Six-time WWE Champion, one-time World Heavyweight Champion, one-time Intercontinental Champion, one-time World Tag Team Champion, 2009 Royal Rumble winner, one of 22 WWE Triple Crown winners
As the WWE heads into the future, Randy Orton will very likely be at the forefront of the movement.
Only 30 years old, Orton is already a seven-time world champion with WWE. He has shown absolute dominance on Raw, where he has been almost impossible to beat without the aide of outside assistance. The Viper is poised to reign atop the WWE kingdom for years to come.
Orton is also a respected voice backstage. He has quickly become a veteran leader, and with the vast amount of veteran talent likely heading into retirement in the next year or two, Orton's role will only become more important.
It may be a while before we see Orton join his father, "Cowboy" Bob Orton, in the WWE Hall of Fame, only because the younger Orton has a long and successful future ahead of him.
Edge
8 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
Seven-time (and current) World Heavyweight Champion, four-time WWE Champion, five-time Intercontinental Champion, 14-time Tag Team Champion, 2001 King of the Ring, 2005 Money in the Bank winner (also earned the briefcase by defeating Mr. Kennedy in 2007), 2010 Royal Rumble winner, one of 22 WWE Triple Crown winners
When all is said and done, Edge may go down as one of the most decorated wrestlers in WWE history.
His résumé speaks for itself, and so do his in-ring performances. Along with kayfabe brother, and real-life close friend, Christian, he put the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match on the map, tearing the house down with the Dudleys and the Hardys long ago. He was the first Money in the Bank winner, and is one of only two men (along with CM Punk) to successfully cash in the briefcase twice.
Edge is a great fan favorite, as he has illustrated over the last few months, but he also makes for one of the best heels currently on the roster.
When Edge enters the WWE Hall of Fame, many in the WWE Universe may parallel his career arc to the man who headlines the 2011 class: The Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels.
Triple H
9 of 10
WWE Career Résumé:
Eight-time WWE Champion, five-time World Heavyweight Champion, five-time Intercontinental Champion, four-time Tag Team Champion, three-time European Champion, 1997 King of the Ring, 2002 Royal Rumble winner, one of 10 WWE Grand Slam winners, one of 22 WWE Triple Crown winners
Triple H may very well be the Ric Flair of our generation.
A 13-time former world champion, Triple H, as he said recently on Raw, has done it all. Whether or not he can beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVII and add that to his résumé will surely not affect his standing amongst the greatest of all time.
His long list of accolades isn't limited to the amount of championships won. He co-founded one of the most iconic factions in pro wrestling history, D-Generation X. He ended the WWE career of Mick Foley. He helped launch the careers of Randy Orton and Batista while spearheading Evolution.
Triple H will likely head into the Hall soon, joining his good friend Shawn Michaels. But that won't be the last we see of The Game, as he was recently named Senior Advisor to Vince McMahon, and is deeply entrenched in the creative side of the business.
The Undertaker
10 of 10
WWE Career Resume:
Four-time WWE Champion, three-time World Heavyweight Champion, seven-time Tag Team Champion, one-time Hardcore Champion, 2007 Royal Rumble winner, undefeated at WrestleMania
There is no clearer way to put it: The Undertaker is the embodiment of WWE.
For more than 20 years, Mark Calaway has portrayed The Undertaker, and the list of accolades is seemingly never-ending.
He is 18-0 at WrestleMania. He established the Hell in a Cell and Casket matches. He ended the career of one of the greatest of all time, Shawn Michaels. He has defeated almost everyone worth beating in recent wrestling history, from Hulk Hogan, to Triple H, to Michaels, to Ric Flair, and more. His character is one of the most instantly recognizable in professional wrestling history.
And he did it all under the WWE flag.
Many point to Hulk Hogan as the face of WWE. While Hogan helped brign WWE from the regional level to the national spotlight, he left the company in 1993. He wasn't there for the Attitude Era, and has been sparsely found since.
All the while, despite numerous injuries and a couple gimmick adjustments, The Undertaker has held fast as the foundation of WWE.
There is little doubt he will find his way to the WWE Hall of Fame once his historic career comes to a close.
