Brett Favre Throws, 'Boys Lose: NFL Week Four Recap

John LorgeSep 29, 2008

Minnesota Vikings 17-Tennessee Titans 30

Despite controversy, the Tennessee Titans are off to a 4-0 start with the help of Albert Haynesworth and their ball-hawk defense.  Tennessee converted four turnovers into 17 points and Haynesworth had two sacks on the day.

Adrian Peterson only carried the ball 20 times (4.4 yards per carry), which has to have Vikings fans scratching their heads.  The Titans' thunder and lightning combination of White and Johnson scored three rushing TDs against the staunch Vikings D-Line.

The Vikings, who had high expectations before the season have fallen to 1-3 and will travel to The Big Easy for a Monday Night match-up with the Saints.

Denver Broncos 19-Kansas City Chiefs 33

The Chiefs fed Larry Johnson the ball 28 times for 198 yards and two rushing touchdowns in an impressive victory over their division rivals, the Denver Broncos, ending a 12 game skid.

Fumbles by Denver WRs Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal led to 10 points for the Chiefs in the first half but it wasn’t until the fourth quarter, when KC scored 17 points, that the game was decided.  TE Tony Gonzalez was responsible for one of the fourth quarter TDs, as he continued to close in on the all-time leader in receiving yards for a tight end.

San Francisco 49ers 17-New Orleans Saints 31

Deuce McAllister came back from injury to carry the ball 20 times and score a diving TD in the fourth quarter to seal the deal against the Niners.

Drew Brees continued his passing assault on the NFL with 363 yards and three touchdowns, showing no signs of missing Marques Colston and Jeremy Shockey.  The Saints didn’t get much help from Reggie Bush either. Bush only ran for 38 yards on 15 touches.

J.T. O’Sullivan was sacked six times, threw two interceptions, and lost a fumble while finishing the game completing 50 percent of his passes.

Arizona Cardinals 35-New York Jets 56

In an old New York Titans jersey, Brett Favre managed to set a career best two weeks before his 39th birthday by throwing for six touchdowns.  After last week's shootout with the Chargers, the Jets headed west again to see who could score more against the Cardinals.

Laverneus Coles caught three TDs and Jerricho Cotchery caught two on Favre’s historic day.  The Cardinals had three WRs over 100 yards, but were shaken up after Anquan Boldin had to be carted off the field after a vicious hit in the end zone.

Kurt Warner turned the ball over six times and was sacked five times, which has us wondering when Matt Leinart will be under center.

Green Bay Packers 21-Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30

The Bucs scored 10 points in the last three minutes of the game for a come-from-behind victory against the former division rival.  Ryan Grant forgot to show up on Sunday, carrying the ball 15 times for 20 yards and adding an impressive negative four yards on two catches, while managing to lose a fumble.

Charles Woodson scored his second defensive touchdown of the season, as the Green Bay defense matched Tampa’s intensity.  Aaron Rodgers suffered a non-contact injury to his throwing arm, but stayed in until the game was decided.

Atlanta Falcons 9-Carolina Panthers 24

Steve Smith scored his first touchdown of the season on a 56-yard catch and run in the second quarter that gave the Panthers the lead for good.  Michael Turner the Burner forgot to hit the jets, and it seems he is only going to be an impact on odd numbered weeks.

The Panthers' two-headed attack of Stewart and Williams rushed for 30 times while amassing 109 yards and a score.  There were no turnovers in the game, and rookie QB Matt Ryan went 21-for-41 with 158 yards.

Houston Texans 27-Jacksonville Jaguars 30 (OT)

David Garrard’s TD run with 1:48 left in the game was answered with a last-second field goal by Kris Brown to push the game into overtime.  In OT, the Jags moved the ball into field goal position and Josh Scobee put a 37-yarder through the uprights for his second game-winning field goal in a row.

David Garrard and Matt Schaub both played well, as neither QB turned the ball over and both had over a 70 percent completion percentage.  The Jags utilized the Shotgun Spread Option look, seen last week by the Dolphins, as Montell Owens scampered 41 yards on the game's first score with a keeper.

Cleveland Browns 20-Cincinnati Bengals 12

The Browns scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to knock off the flailing Bengals.  Both teams were looking for their first win, and without Carson Palmer the Bengals could only muster 211 yards of total offense.

Chad Ocho Cinco did manage to catch his first TD pass of the season, but it was too little to late as the Browns caught a glimmer of hope heading into the bye week.

Buffalo Bills 31-St. Louis Rams 14

The 4-0 Bills are the surprise team of the season as they continue their path to the playoffs with a runaway victory over the Rams.

St. Louis, a strong candidate for the No. 1 pick in the draft, could not put together enough offense behind new starting QB Trent Green.  On 29 touches, Stephen Jackson did amass 188 yards and a TD, but there was no support from his teammates, something he is becoming very accustomed to.

The Bills will face the Arizona Cardinals next, as they look to go 3-0 against NFC West opponents.

Washington Redskins 26-Dallas Cowboys 24

Jim Zorn became the first Redskins head coach to go into Big D and come out victorious in his first game.

The Skins used a balanced attack from Campbell (20-for-31, 231 yards, two TDs) and Portis (21 carries, 121 yards) to methodically put the Cowboys away, never turning the ball over.  Dallas got away from their running game as power back Marion Barber only had eight carries on the day.

Squeaky wheel T.O. may have been partially responsible for the play calling, as he was given two carries on the game.  Owens has been known to drop should-be catches throughout his career and continued that trend in the game.  Santana Moss was a big-time player in this big-time game with eight catches for 145 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles 20-Chicago Bears 24

The Bears hit the ground running, and started the game with a three-play 59-yard drive that ended in a 19-yard TD pass to Greg Olsen after forcing the Eagles to go three-and-out in 28 seconds.

Kyle Orton threw two more first-half TDs, including one to Devin Hester, who showed he has legitimate receiver skills.  Without Brian Westbrook, it was apparent the Eagles did not have their go-to-guy on the field.  DeSean Jackson continued to impress, then let down, as he muffed a punt after scoring a first quarter touchdown.  Both defenses were very active, but the Bears held on in the end to get back to .500.

Monday Night Matchup

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers

This will be a hard-fought defensive battle.  Without Willie Parker, Baltimore will be able to focus more on shutting down Pittsburgh's passing game and putting pressure on Big Ben, who was sacked six times last week. Rashard Mendenhall will get a chance to show the world what he can do, but don’t expect Ray Lewis and the gang to let a rookie run all over them.

On the other side of the story, rookie QB Joe Flacco will have the tough task of moving the ball up and down the field against the Steel Curtain.  Willis won’t be able to get things going.  Look for Pittsburgh to ride out an early lead to a 16-10 victory.

Well it turned out to be a defensive battle that Pitt won in OT, 23-20.  Willis and Mendenhall both left the game with injury. Another great MNF game.
