Broncos-Chiefs: Chiefs Win Turnover Battle, Game

Sayre BedingerSep 28, 2008

The Kansas City Chiefs forced four turnovers against the Broncos and took advantage of those in a 33-19 win on Sunday. Larry Johnson had 198 yards, accompanied by two touchdown runs, to set the pace offensively. Denver played solid defense, but that was overshadowed by turnovers forced by Kansas City.

Jay Cutler had two interceptions, Brandon Marshall fumbled, and Eddie Royal fumbled in the first quarter and the Chiefs made the Broncos pay.

Damon Huard made some big third-down conversions, looking to Dwayne Bowe, Tony Gonzalez, and Jeff Webb late in the game.

Denver's offense stalled when it reached the red zone, and the Broncos were forced to kick five field goals, four of which were made.

The game MVP award undoubtedly goes to Chiefs RB Larry Johnson, who had over 100 yards for the fifth consecutive game against the Broncos.

Jay Cutler was forced into a lot of short-yardage passes, limiting the Broncos' big-play ability. Cutler connected with Brandon Marshall on a touchdown pass, but that would be the lone Bronco score.

Denver lost its first game of the season and went home with a record of 3-1. Kansas City improved to 1-3.

The Broncos will face the Tampa Bay Buccanneers next week at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Denver's players and coaches said all week leading up to the game that they were not going to "overlook" the Chiefs, but they may have been a bit over-cautious.

Bronco special teamer Spencer Larsen had an onside kick in his hands twice, but the ball came free as Larsen went to the turf, and Kansas City recovered. A recovered onside kick would have given the Broncos the ball at the Chiefs' 40-yard line with over two minutes and two timeouts with the Broncos down by seven.

Give Kansas City all the credit in the world. They were very well prepared and extremely well coached for this game. They forced turnovers and made the Broncos pay.

Don't worry Denver fans, your Broncos are still for real. Despite four turnovers, the offense made it to the red zone/scoring range seven times. The points were there for the taking, but Denver needed to take advantage.
