MMA's Downfall Will Be Brought About by UFC's Greed

Name LessSep 27, 2008

There's something about MMA that saddens me these days. It's not the lack of fights. It's not the "show behind the show," we're given some great characters.

It's the lack of competitive individuals being whisked out of the industry by UFC—the equivalent of who many in my industry see as monopolistic—Microsoft.

There are some differences between Microsoft and UFC. For example, Microsoft is known to buy out the competition and integrate them into an operating system. UFC singles out any competition and seems to be ridding themselves of anyone who doesn't want to conform to the UFC's views.

If this were any other sport, such as baseball, I'm sure congress would have intervened and asked what was going on. MMA has been around for a while, and it's wonderful to see the progression and acceptance; however, they seem to be their own worst enemy without realizing this.

“If it were necessary to give the briefest possible definition of imperialism, we should have to say that imperialism is the monopoly stage of capitalism.” - Vladimir Lenin (founder of the Russian Communist Party).

What's left for fighters after UFC when UFC dissolves every other organization? Can anyone truly believe there will be another competitive company in the making? MMA was a sport when I first began watching it. It was something the fighters looked forward to.

Nowadays, the show seems to be catering solely to advertisers, and while there is nothing wrong with making money, at the end of the day, when you have no fighters, you'll make no money.

Which will it be Dana? You can't have XYIENCE fighting Mountain Dew and draw big bucks.

Don't get me wrong, fighters with egos alienating themselves from any company rightful deserve to be blacklisted; however, blacklisting potential superstars is disastrous.

Unlike baseball or football, there really isn't an impressive metric in MMA where ranking is concerned. Whomever is popular at the moment is who is going to be fighting whomever UFC wants you to fight, bottom line.

It's not about putting on a good fight anymore; it seems to be putting on pretty lighting. "Make sure those logos are showing."

While many will disagree with me, does anyone truly believe Forrest Griffin deserved to be in the ring with Rampage Jackson anyhow? Ramblings aside, when will there be a model based on metrics, something that can fairly and accurately be measured. Why should we rely on the powers that be to determine what they believe is fair. How much money becomes enough Dana?

My feelings on MMA have turned from must watch to, I'll see it whenever it comes on TNT or if I can get a glimpse on YouTube. There was a time when I enjoyed waiting on the Pay Per View program to start so I could see two gladiators do what they did best. Nowadays, it's just a little bit harder, as I sit back wondering if someone is going to throw a fight.

I don't blame the fighters; I blame greed. Think about how difficult it would be to analyze someone throwing a fight in MMA. The likelihood of us discovering this would likely have to come from a whistleblower.

Whistleblower? There would be no other organization they'd be able to work for, so the chances are as slim as finding a needle in a haystack under the Atlantic Ocean during hurricane season.

I'll continue to watch MMA and read about my favorite fighters. I hope Dana White doesn't expect me to continue paying for PPV events. I can go to Best Buy or Macy's to see logos. And while one fan may not signal trouble to anyone at UFC, I'm positive there are others who feel the same way as I do.

Maybe it's time someone at UFC either tones down their arrogance or just continue to sit back, counting blood money, wondering why it's somehow coming to a standstill.
