Fantasy Football Week Four: Start 'Em & Sit 'Em

Michael WhooleySep 25, 2008

Sometimes it takes time to make a decision. I mean, just look at the whole Matt Millen fiasco in Detroit. Lions' owner William Clay Ford really wanted to be sure that Millen was not the guy who would lead the Lions to the promised land before parting ways.

It took a 31-81 record and seven years before Ford realized it, but finally the right decision has been made. You, though, cannot take seven years to decide on your Week Four starters. Don't worry; help is on the way. All you need to do is read the Week Four Start 'Em & Sit 'Em report.

QUARTERBACKS - START 'EM

Carson Palmer (Cincinnati Bengals) vs. Cleveland

I guess it's only fair to give Palmer some love in the Start 'Em & Sit 'Em after bashing him the previous two weeks. We don't have to like it, however. After a miserable first three games in which he scored a total of three fantasy points, Palmer gave his faithful something to smile about last week against a tough Giants pass defense.

Palmer threw for 286 yards and one TD.

Perhaps the Bengals can now start righting their ship this season. Against the Browns, Palmer will have to play more like he did in the Bengals first matchup (401 yards, 6 TDs, 2 INTs) than the second (115 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs) if the Bengals are to escape with victory.

We think he falls somewhere in the middle, meaning he's a solid start this week.

Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills) @ St. Louis

Don't look now, but the Bills currently sit atop the AFC East standings with a 3-0 record. A big reason for these wins is the play of Trent Edwards. Through three games, the Bills' QB has thrown for 733 yards and three TDs with just one INT.

It's become quite obvious why Buffalo decided to hand the reins over to him and designate "Just Pathetic" Losman to clipboard duties. Even if this wasn't a bye week, Edwards would be a good start.

Consider that the St. Louis Rams are giving up 272.3 passing yards a game, have allowed seven passing TDs, and have failed to force a single interception on the season. Trent Edwards should play mistake-free football this week against the Rams. Look for a big game from him.

Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins) @ Dallas

The Washington Redskins have looked like a completely different team than the one that opened the NFL season on Thursday Night football against the New York Giants, and it all starts with quarterback Jason Campbell.

Campbell seems to be getting more comfortable in Jim Zorn's West Coast offense, throwing for 514 yards and three TDs the past two weeks. He should continue the upward trend in Week Four against the Cowboys. After all, the last time Campbell went to Dallas, he threw 54 passes for 348 yards, two TDs, and one INT. With the way Dallas' offense is going, look for Campbell to air it out in response.

QUARTERBACKS - SIT 'EM

Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns) @ Cincinnati

It's funny how things at times come full circle. In 2007, Anderson had his coming out party against the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing for 328 yards and five TDs with just one INT, thereby solidifying his role as the Browns' starting QB.

In 2008, Anderson's matchup with the Bengals appears to be his going away party. Anderson has struggled mightily this season, with a QB rating of 43.5 in three games. He already has five INTs on the year, while throwing just two TDs.

With Brady Quinn waiting in the wings, Anderson is on a short leash and very well could be holding the clipboard by games end.

Brian Griese (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) vs. Green Bay

Yes, the Packers rank 22nd against the pass, but they also rank 26th against the run. Hence, the Bucs won't find themselves unable to move things on the ground this week like they did in Week Three against Da' Bears. That means Griese won't have to hurl anywhere near the 67 passes he threw last Sunday. Consider that he's only averaging 5.8 yards per pass and those fewer throws do not translate into numbers anywhere near starter-worthy.

Trent Green (St. Louis Rams) vs. Buffalo

By now, everyone is well aware of the Rams' struggles this season. Not only do they rank dead last amongst defenses in the NFL, they also find themselves in the 31st spot on the offensive side of the ball.

So, what do they do?

They bench Marc Bulger and put Trent Green in his place. Miraculously, this is supposed to turn everything around. But, unless Trent Green is bringing five brand new offensive linemen with him, it's going to be the same ol' story in St. Louis.

RUNNING BACKS - START 'EM

Reggie Bush (New Orleans Saints) vs. San Francisco

Bush is finally looking like the dynamic back many thought he would be after his time at USC. He may not be a dominant pure rusher at the NFL level (he only has 152 yards and one TD on 42 attempts this season), but his ability as a receiver (250 yards and two TDs) more than makes up for that.

That ability will serve Bush well these coming weeks, as the Saints will be without both tight end, Jeremy Shockey, and stud wide receiver, Marques Colston. Look for him to have a big role in this week's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
