Why Are Everyone's NFL Power Rankings The Same: Redskins and Jets Misranked

Kevin RobertsSep 25, 2008

I love Brett Favre and his new "deer in the headlights" role he is playing. But is it a fasad? Is he really having trouble learning the playbook, or is he just that huge a fan of dramatics that he'd rather dig his new team out of a hole than start off 3-0?

Who knows.

And how about those Redskins? Is anyone else ready to dress up in a pig mask and women's clothing? Nah, didn't think so. But the whole 2-1 start and being in the "best" division in football sure sparks the topic of playoffs, despite the Redskins being a favored pre-season stinker.

But it's not all about the facts, these days. If it were, everyone's rankings wouldn't be exactly the same. And, if you were worried I'd keep going on this rant and not stop until my laptop shuts off or burns holes in my pants, then you'd be eerily right. But read on.

I have two problems with other people's NFL Power Rankings on this site:

First, the Redskins are not THAT good, and the Jets are not THAT bad.

The Redskins have defeated two teams that have good offenses, but arguably less than formidable defenses. They're a decent team, but they haven't proven anything to me yet.

I mean they beat the Cardinals and we're supposed to be impressed? The 49ers started 2-0 last season and ended 4-12. Are we picking the Bills vs the Redskins in the Super Bowl, now?

The Redskins are worse, or not as good, as at least 5 of the teams that several writers have them rated above. It's called the power rankings, not the record rankings.

Second, as already mentioned, the Jets have faced three interesting opponents. The Dolphins, who destroyed the Patriots, were the lone opponent they beat, which can no longer be a bad thing. It can be nothing if you'd like, but it's definitely not a bad thing.

Next, the Patriots put the clamps on the Jets' offense in week two, but only won 19-10, something experts would call encouraging before the Miami beat down on New England.

Lastly, an 0-2 and desperate San Diego team was facing a must-win situation, and they were at home, and they crush the Jets 48-29. How much of that would you say was the Chargers responding in dire situations, than the Jets actually sucking?

Let it be known: It's only a 50-50 chance that Favre really is the difference here, and the Jets being 3-0 to 0-3 wouldn't answer that debate for me. I'll give you a verdict after 8 games. Also, I think we're all aware that Favre and his receivers are not on the same page and need to get there, fast. But here's where it gets interesting. The Jets face the Cardinals, a team the Redskins just beat. So if the Jets beat the Cardinals, do they vault from the 20's into the top ten? Geez. Heck no.

Let's just watch this week as the Redskins lose and the Jets win. Then we'll all have to take a good look at some of these teams in assessing who they really are.

Because, come on. The Atlanta Falcons are 2-1. Three weeks means NOTHING.
