Terry Brown's AFC Wimbledon looked to continue their winning ways when they took on Tamworth F.C. With Crawley Town breathing down their necks, every point mattered.
The Dons did have injury problems to sort out.
"On the injury front, Sammy Moore is still suffering from an ankle ligament injury he incurred ten days ago," Brown said. "Unfortunately, the injury hasn't healed as quickly as we had hoped and he will not be available for the next couple of games. Also, Luke Moore tweaked a medial knee ligament in training today and he will be rested over the weekend.
"However, looking on the bright side, Kirk Hudson has responded well to treatment and will be available for selection on Saturday, along with Drewe Broughton who, having passed his medical, trained with the players today. Drewe will add height and strength to our forward line and he allows us to change our shape if necessary.
"Although Drewe is a different type of target man to Danny, he will also offer us cover if Danny should pick up an injury. Danny and Drewe worked well together today and I am hopeful they can quickly strike up a fruitful partnership on the pitch. Finally, Ismail Yakubu has responded well to his final injection and should be fit and available for selection on Tuesday."
A grueling slate of match were on the way for the Wombles, according to the manager.
"The game at Tamworth is the first of five games within a period of 15 days. These games will be crucial as to the eventual outcome of both championship and playoffs. We have emphasised to the players that we need to go on a run of back to back wins if we are to press Crawley and Luton for the title.
"The feeling within the squad is very positive and there are certainly enough points available to enable us to make a concerted challenge for the championship. The reason why the players and I are in a bullish mood is simply that we have 42 points to play for. If we can get on a proper run then we are certainly in with a chance."
James Mulley opened the scoring in the 18th minute to give AFC Wimbledon a 1-0 halftime lead. Danny Kedwell made it 2-0 Dons on 50 minutes.
After Michael Wylde in the 51st and Daniel Bradley in the 65th tied it for Tamworth, Wimbledon responded with goals from Broughton in the 75th minute, Kedwell in the 89th to complete his brace and Rashid Yussuff in the 90th minute to give the Wombles a 5-2 victory, keeping them at the top of the Football Conference National table.
Up next for AFC Wimbledon is a couple of matches. A crucial Tuesday night match with Wresham at Kingsmeadow beckons. Kickoff is scheduled for Feb. 22 at 2:45 p.m. ET.
The Dons will then host Altrincham on Saturday, Feb. 26 to close out the month of matches. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET.
