Jimmie Johnson: 10 Reasons He Won't Win Another NASCAR Sprint Cup Title in 201

Melissa Bauer-HerzogFeb 14, 2011

Jimmie Johnson's 2011 run for the championship has already been named the "Run for the Six Pack", but with a year of hurdles in front of him, the sixth trophy may be his toughest challenge yet.

On the following slides, I cover some reasons that we may not see Mr. Five Time hoisting a trophy over his head this year.

Threat No. 1: Denny Hamlin

Hamlin was the top threat for Johnson last year and there's no reason to thing he won't be contending again this year.  The only thing going for Johnson is that Hamlin isn't getting any surgery this year... yet.

Threat No. 2: The New Format

Johnson has adapted to every other stumbling block NASCAR has thrown at him so there's no reason this will be any different, but we know he has to have a weakness somewhere.

Threat No. 3: His Own Teammates

There has been a shake up at HMS this offseason and there's no doubt Rick Hendrick will make something happen.  The question is, will that risk his best driver's chance at another championship in 2011?

Threat No. 4: Everyone Is Gunning For Him

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - FEBRUARY 12: Jeff Gordon, driver of the #24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet, and Jimmie Johnson, driver of the #48 Lowe's Chevrolet, lead Kevin Harvick, driver of the #29 Budweiser Chevrolet, Ryan Newman, driver of the #39 Wix Chevrolet

This hasn't changed since the last time he ran for a championship, but everyone wants to be the one that ends King Jimmie's reign.  The drivers will be gunning for him and the teams will be trying to figure out how to stop him. Has someone figured out a way how to crown a new King?

Threat No. 5: The Equipment

No car is break-proof and overall, Johnson has had pretty good luck with his equipment not failing him. But you never know when a car will quit.

Threat No. 6: Wrecks

The No. 48 crew is one of the best at bringing cars back from a wreck to finish the race (like this picture from a race in 2009), but there are a few wrecks that you can't bring a car back from.

Threat No. 7: Restrictor Plates

Johnson is a monster on most tracks, but restrictor plate racing seems to be his weakness. If he doesn't have good finishes there, he will have to work extra hard at other tracks.

Threat No. 8: His Crew

Last year Johnson had a crew swap at the end of the season.  A pit crew is a huge part of a winning team and they are definitely the wild card when it comes to a successful run.

Threat No. 9: Distractions

We've discovered that Johnson gets stronger when he has more to focus on, but at what point does he have too many distractions in his life? Could another one pop up and be his undoing?

Threat No. 10: Chad

10 of 10
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - FEBRUARY 11: Jimmie Johnson, driver of the #48 Lowe's Chevrolet, walks in the garage area with crew chief Chad Knaus during practice for the NASCAR Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway on February 11, 2011 in Daytona B

We know that Chad Knaus is Johnson's loyal sidekick (or is Johnson his?), but like 2005, could they have a falling out that makes them miss the championship?  Their bond seems as strong as ever, but you never know when something may happen to break it.
