Tyson Fury: 'David Haye Is a Phoney and Fraud, Would Get Beat Up by Klitschko'

Johnny WalkerFeb 10, 2011

Young British heavyweight Tyson Fury is looking to make a name for himself in his homeland, and he's going after the top dog in order to do it.

The 6'9" Fury, 22, has launched a scathing attack on WBA heavyweight champion David Haye of England, telling The Sun, "I believe [Haye's] a phoney, he's not a proper world champion and he's a fraud.

"As Audley Harrison was saying last year, Haye's a false prophet."

So far, Fury is perhaps most famous for having the best name in boxing, but he is looking to put his stamp on the heavyweight division, going so far as to enlist The Ring-recognized world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko's trainer, Emanuel Steward, to work his corner in recent fights.

Fury thinks Haye hasn't got what it takes to hang with Klitschko.

"Haye could win as it only takes one punch, but I don't think he'll do it. I think he'll get beaten up really badly," he says.

"Haye's got a lot of hype behind and he has people believing he's the real deal.

"But I believe anyone who stands up to him and fights back has a good chance of beating him."

Fury also questions Haye's repeated assertions that he will retire in October upon turning 31.

"What's the point in retiring? Haye hasn't fought anybody as world champion really apart from has-beens and a never-has-been in Audley Harrison," Fury contends.

"It was his dream to become world heavyweight champion and he's done that, so he's done really well.

"But why would you just pack it in when you've not earned to your maximum potential and you've not fought in any mega fights? Surely you've got to test yourself?"

Fury even goes so far as to contend that his countryman, Dereck Chisora, who fights Klitschko on April 30, has a better chance against the Ukrainian star than Haye would.

"I think Chisora-Klitschko is a better fight than Haye-Klitschko because Klitschko will have a harder time with Chisora," Fury says.

"Chisora is going to give it a go against Klitschko, he's going to put him under pressure.

"I've watched Klitschko at his fight camp and he doesn't like anyone to put pressure on him at all."

And what about the opinionated Mr. Tyson Fury?

Does he see himself in Chisora's boxing shoes?

"I wouldn't be too interested in facing someone like Klitschko because it's pointless at the minute," Fury replies.

"I know it's a world title shot but it's more than just that. It's something you've got to be properly prepared for and you've got to have the experience to be in there."
