Yoosof Farah’s Top Five EPL Players: Matchday 5

Yoosof FarahSep 22, 2008

Here are my top five players from the fifth matchday in the Barclays Premier League:

5) Ji-Sung Park — Manchester United

Some people might disagree with this one, but for me, Ji-Sung Park was the fifth best player in the EPL this weekend.

The Korean midfielder looks to have finally overcome his injury problems after a fantastic performance against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge yesterday. Park was at the heart of everything United did and in my view deserved the man of the match award ahead of Rio Ferdinand. Park was also on the scoresheet, finishing after excellent build-up play from the Champions.

4) Michael Chopra — Sunderland

Another player to overcome problems with a fantastic performance on the weekend. Four weeks after checking into rehab for problems with gambling addiction, Michael Chopra looks to have overcome such problems with an inspirational performance that saw him score twice to wrap up a win for Sunderland.

A deserved man of the match winner, despite being run close by the outstanding Craig Gordon.

3) John Carew — Aston Villa

He just has to make this list. Fully deserves his third place ranking, as well as his Man of the Match award. The Big Norwegian forward was instrumental in Villa's win over West Brom on Sunday. He scored a brilliant opener with his superb header for Villa on 27 minutes, just two minutes before Agbonlahor made it two. He was unlucky not to get a hat-trick actually, as he hit the post twice in the second half.

2) David Di Michele — West Ham United

My mate John went to the game at Upton Park, and after seeing his side give Zola the perfect start to his managerial career at West Ham, there was one player he could not shut up about. And that was David Di Michele.

No wonder why, the Italian was fantastic on his home debut, scoring twice to open his West Ham and EPL account. He also set up Matthew Etherington for the Hammers' third, although replays suggest he just scuffed his shot and got lucky. But I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt here, a good set-up and a great game for Di Michele, a deserved Man of the Match winner.

1) Robinho — Manchester City

A British record transfer fee. £32.4million. A lot of money for any player, but already it seems like it could be well worth it for Manchester City. After scoring a stunning free-kick on his debut, Robinho made it two goals in two games with a fantastic performance.

It was a performance that everything: the tricks, the skills, the passes, the goals, and just plain cheekiness. Every time Robinho got the ball you always expected something, and every time he delivered. With every touch of the ball he seemed to bamboozle defenders, spinning round and round, going this way and that, weaving in and out, left to right and right to left, it's surprising the Pompey defenders weren't sick with dizziness after all that!

A great game for the Brazilian superstar, who has given Eastlands a touch of glamour with his fine football and Brazilian magic. He's even got his teammates in on this Brazilian magic act, just check out SWP setting up Ched Evans for City's sixth! Obviously a deserved Man of the Match winner for me, otherwise he wouldn't be top!
