St. Louis Rams: It's Time for a Change

Austin SeifertSep 22, 2008

The Rams suffered yet another defeat in week three, this time at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks.  It was the seventh time in the teams' last eight meetings that the Seahawks have walked away with the win.

Rams fans and management were looking forward to this game; the Seahawks had only two active wide receivers at the beginning of the week and they hadn't gotten off to the best start after the first two weeks, either.  During the week, however, the Seahawks signed two receivers: Koren Robinson and Keary Colbert.

Game day rolled around and the Rams were still excited and trying to keep their spirits alive and hopes up.  By the end of the first half they were down, but not out.  In the second half, the Rams put themselves back in the game—at least for the third quarter—making the score 27-13.

The Rams would not have an offense for the rest of the game, though, as the Seahawks would score two more times on their way to a 37-13 win.  The Rams had very few bright spots, but the two minute offense was somewhat effective.  This might make one wonder why they didn't try to do that earlier in the game just to change the pace up a little—maybe it would have turned out another couple scores.

Many people believe Scott Linehan is now done in St. Louis; this may be true, but for the rest of this season I would propose a different move.  As unorthodox as it may sound, why not keep Scott Linehan around as the offensive coordinator (the job he did so well before joining the Rams) and promote Jim Haslett to the interim head coach?

He has been a head coach in the league and maybe just the change in leadership would do some good.  Plus, with this plan they would keep some consistency with the coaching staff.

I know people would argue about the power struggle, but I think that it really couldn't hurt this team that much.  They don't have much room to go down any further.  Plus I think Scott Linehan has come to grips with the fact that he may not be ready to continue being a head coach just yet.
