Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United: Honours Even In An Intense Game.

...Sep 21, 2008

Chelsea preserved their four-and-a-half year unbeaten home league record when Salomon Kalou headed to equalise Park Ji-Sung's opener for Manchester United and earn a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

It is now four years and seven months to the day that Chelsea last lost a league game at the Bridge, but United looked set to put an end to that run after an improved performance.

United took the lead after 18 minutes through Park, who finished from close range after Petr Cech saved a low drive from Dimitar Berbatov following excellent work by Patrice Evra.

Chelsea drew level when substitute Kalou rose unmarked in the visiting penalty area to head home a Obi Mikel free-kick with 10 minutes remaining.

The draw is no less than Chelsea deserved after dominating the attacking play, yet United always looked a threat on the break and could have extended their lead.

Michael Ballack split United's defence wide open, Joe Cole needed to do better than blast his shot straight at Kuszczak, who was quickly becoming one of the visitors key men.

However, the United keeper was powerless as Bosingwa fired in a superb cross. Anelka could not capitalise and squandered the chance with the goal at his mercy.

On the break United piled into the Chelsea box and Rooney was alone at the back post but only to shoot into the side-netting from 10 yards.

Chelsea flew on to the attack again and Joe Cole fed on the right. His low and hard cross was blocked by Neville and the rebound was met by Kalou but he fired over the bar from 10 yards!

The game ended in bad tempered fashion as United, who had seven players booked, complained bitterly at referee Mike Riley.

Didier Drogba had gone down under Ferdinand's challenge and Riley who blew his whistle for the freekick, or at least thats how it seemed.

In midst of all the ferocious protests from the United players, Riley suddenly blew his whistle again to signal the end of the game.

Chelsea manage to keep the hugely impressive home record in tact.
