City Crush Pompey at Eastlands

Ryan LynchSep 21, 2008

Having just watched Manchester City demolish Portsmouth at the City of Manchester Stadium in a 6-0 win that is Portsmouth's worst loss in their entire tenure in the Premier League, I am at a loss for words.

Other than, of course, the obscenities I've been screaming loudly since Jo opened the scoring and the fact that I just told my fiancee I don't love her right now because, after all, there is no love left in my world after that performance by Portsmouth.

In fact, for those who can be found perusing my facebook, they will find a string of commentary of the last ten minutes of the match via status updates as each of the goals found the back of the net.

Six different goalscoreres piled the misery on Pompey after what was a glorious week for most supporters of the south coast side, having tasted victory on their first European outing on Thursday. It would be a tale of two sides, however, as Manchester City's three central cogs - Robinho, Shaun Wright-Phillips, and Stephen Ireland - seemed to have their hand in everything City created, whereas Portsmouth never looked like creating anything and looked terribly suspect at the back.

In fact, the only shot on goal that I can even remember Pompey having against their hosts came from a tame Peter Croch effort in the 93rd minute.

With Sean Davis hobbling off in the first half injured, the remaining Portsmouth side looked a shadow of the team that has found a good vein of form these past few weeks, with Jermain Defoe failing to have any service, Nadir Belhadj looking an entirely different player as he was run ragged by Wright Phillips, a ghost playing in place of Peter Crouch, while Kaboul and Distin were mocked throughout the game by the magic of £32.5 million Robinho.

City boss Mark Hughes even thought it fitting to switch things around in the second half with an already comfortable win, to then see substitutes Ched Evans and Gelson Fernandes both find the back of the net.

Even Richard Dunne who - along with teammate Wright-Phillips - had strongly been linked with Portsmouth over the summer managed to find the back of the net against the visitors. It was just that kind of day.

Overall, the game will definitely be one Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp and his players will want to put behind them with the match against struggling Tottenham in only a few days time, whereas City continue to fire warning shots at the Premier League elite that things are changing.

City have already proven that tens of millions of pounds can significantly improve a team; what is to come if, in the January transfer window, they unleash their spending power as so many have already been anticipating?
