College Football: 10 Fan Bases Who Want Their Current Coach Fired
College football is a love-hate relationship in many regards. Nothing is more reflective of this then the delicate relationship between coach and fan base.
Win ten games, and you are a hero. Win four in the very next season, and you are on the way out on the first train home.
Here are ten coaches and the fan bases who really want them to "peace out".
Dabo Swinney, Clemson
1 of 10
Coach Dabo is a favorite coach in the state of South Carolina. Too bad he's a favorite of the rival South Carolina Gamecock faithful more so than the Clemson fans. There are many "Fire Dabo Swinney" sites (some even selling T-Shirts!) and Facebook pages popping up.
He is 19-15 in three seasons at Clemson, with a 1-2 record against their bitter rivals. Fans are starting to believe that he is more of a cheerleader than a coach.
He is a heck of a recruiter, but he is one more average to below average season from getting the axe.
Paul Wulff, Washington State
2 of 10
Paul Wulff is easily the most hated coach by its own fanbase in college football. Posting an incredibly bad 5-32 record at Washington State with two back to back double digit loss column seasons (11 in 2009 and 10 in 2010), Wulff's time is getting a little short.
There is a fire Wulff Facebook petition which states that the only other option is installing pink turf and playing two-hand touch.
Yeah, it is that bad.
Lane Kiffin, USC
3 of 10
Lane Kiffin is one of the most hated college football coaches in the history of the game. While I can't back that up with data, I would put money on that.
After screwing over an NFL franchise and a major college football team, he was handed a job at one of the most universally recognized football programs in the country, and no one is sure why.
One average 8-5 season will not prove anything to anyone, especially with the talent on the Southern California team. While there are not as many "Fire Lane Kiffin" sites as others, Southern California fans are a little on the nervous side.
Some try to point to his stellar 2011 recruiting class as the reason he should stay, but come on... you and I both know that the USC brand can recruit by itself. I could probably recruit a top 10 class for USC.
Mike Locksley, New Mexico
4 of 10
.083... that is Locksley's winning percentage at New Mexico. While not a power school in a power conference, this MWC school's fans expect and demand more. They thought he was all but out the door after a disastrous 1-11 season in 2009... but, New Mexico shocked everyone by bringing him back.
He rewarded them by putting up a second consecutive 1-11 season.
How he is still a coach is beyond me, and all of New Mexico's fans.
Rick Neuheisel, UCLA
5 of 10
A 15-22 record at one of the proudest universities on the west coast will not garner much job security. After a 4-8 season, most UCLA fans have had enough.
The coach with the most "Fire" threads and sites on this list, Rick has reached the end of his rope. The only way he can possibly save his job is a magical 2011... which is not likely. At all.
In fact, someone is selling the "hottest domain name" (firericknuheisel.com) for 250,000 dollars, thinking that some rich UCLA alumni will pay up to help in the firing effort.
So far, no takers, but if there is another slow start this season, I could see someone ponying up the dough.
Jim Tressel, Ohio State
6 of 10
This one is a little touchy. There are many fans who still love and adore one of the winningest coaches in college football.
However, there are now a great deal many who think that "The Vest" is the worst thing since Lane Kiffin and is an affront to all things college football.
FireJimTressel.com is a very popular new site indeed...
Steve Fairchild, Colorado State
7 of 10
Colorado State is wallowing in a "lack of caring" stage. The program has zero credibility at this point, and it all starts at the top, with a lackadaisical Steve Fairchild.
The fans want him gone, and point to his lack of intensity as a main reason. Colorado State has been competitive before, and they could be again. If they can get a hold of a coach who knows how to run an offense.
Larry Porter, Memphis
8 of 10
Ok, so it is tough to truly judge one season for a coach. However, when you take a scrappy team like Memphis who only finished 2-10 in 2009, and drop them to 1-11, their lowest win total since 1986, you have a serious problem.
Fans are clamoring for his quick exit. Some could say that you need to give a coach more time... but when you are outscored 173-478, there isn't much you can say. They were inept on offense, defense, special teams, and everything in between.
Memphis fans demand better.
Dennis Erickson, Arizona State
9 of 10
Dennis Erickson started his Arizona State career with a bang, recording a 10-3 season and a final ranking of 16th in the AP polls, and then everything went downhill. With three seasons of five, four, and six wins, the Sun Devils are wallowing in mediocrity.
There is a Twitter account, Facebook page, and official fan board dedicated to the firing of Dennis Erickson. It will take a massive winning streak in 2011 to save his job. With a horrible 2010 recruiting class, it doesn't look as if help is on the way.
Houston Nutt, Mississippi
10 of 10
The SEC coach on the biggest hot-seat, Houston Nutt has one more chance to win over the Ole' Miss faithful.
If you are a "fire whoever" item connoisseur, you can't go wrong with Mr. Nutt, who has mugs, t-shirts, shorts, flags, and all sorts of other miscellaneous items made (and sold) by fans.
The entire fan-base roared with delight when an airplane carrying the message "Be a Nutt cracker; Fire Houston" flew over the stadium before a game against Arkansas.
Not only is he losing on the field (with a talented team), but also losing in the realm of general sanity. His failed experiment with problem-player Jeremiah Masoli showed he cares more about talent than class.
