NFL Week Three Picks:

Kevin RobertsSep 18, 2008

Tom Brady is lost for the season. Derek Anderson, Matt Hasselbeck, and Carson Palmer are all playing like rookies, and Jay Cutler is making everyone forget about John Elway all over again.

This has officially been the craziest opening two weeks to an NFL season we have ever seen. Teams like the Cardinals and Panthers have opened the season 2-0, while trendy Super Bowl picks Jacksonville, Minnesota, and San Diego have all opened winless. And I'm here to tell you all five of those teams won't be changing direction any time soon.

Kurt Warner is for real, Steve Smith will assist in creating more Carolina magic, the Jaguars offensive line woes will continue to crush them, Minnesota's lack of a passing game will continue to sink them, and the Chargers won't be able to get their first win against the Brett Favre-led Jets.

Here are the picks for week 3 in the NFL: Predicted winner in bold/italics.

1. Chiefs at Falcons

In what will undoubtedly be an inconsistent rookie season, this is a perfect bounce-back game for Matt Ryan, but that doesn't mean the Falcons get the nod. I have a strange feeling Tyler Thigpen is going to do something special in this game, and the Chiefs pull it off 24-17.

If the Raiders can unleash their potent rush attack early and be successful, they have a real chance at getting over the .500 hump, but it's not likely. The Bills' defense is solid and is backed by Trent Edwards, who isn't flashy, but he doesn't make many mistakes. expect Edwards to have three or more scores in a blowout, 40-14.

I'd like to see the straight face of the guy who says," This is Carson Palmer's first productive game of the season". It just isn't happening. If you're a fantasy football guy, sit every Bengal you have. Giants run away, brutalizing the Cincinnati offense, 37-13.

It's not so much that it's Miami or New England we're talking about, but more that it's a home game for the Pats', and Randy Moss can't help but lick his chops when looking at this secondary. It should be the Patriots first offensive explosion of the season: 35-7.

Matt Schaub and the rest of the Houston offense got an extra week to figure out where they went wrong in week two, and let's hope their defense took full advantage, as well. I like Kerry Collins and the Titans on the season, but the Texans are an up-and-coming team. They win a tight one 21-20.

Brian Griese never fairs well against even remotely good defenses, and this game won't be any different. It will be close, but the Bears will win it on defense alone: 16-10.

7. Cardinals at Redskins

I just don't see how Kurt Warner can be stopped right now. And to make matters worse for opposing defenses, the Cardinals have yet to truly get their running game going. While the pass attack will be alive and well, look for Edgerrin James and Tim Hightower to get the ground game moving in a 31-28 victory.

8. Panthers at Vikings

The Vikings picked a bad team to get their first win of the season against. Gus Frerotte wasn't any good with the Rams last season, and there's no reason to think why he should be any better with no receivers in Minnesota. Steve Smith is going to make up for being out for two weeks. You can take that to the bank. Carolina dominates for the first time this season in a 34-13 win.

Two terrific offenses battling with two mediocre defense. It's a shootout, but Denver's better D' gets the nod, only slightly, in a 24-21 win.

10. Lions at 49ers

Don't think for a second Mike Martz doesn't hold a grudge. He wants to show Detroit what kind of mastermind they got rid of, and it appears he just might have the weapons to do it. J.T. O'Sullivan has a breakout game in a 33-17 win.

11. Rams at Seahawks

In a battle between two winless teams, it's probably the safe bet to go with the home team, and the team that won more than 3 games last season. Matt Hasselbeck regains his form and helps Koren Robinson get re-adjusted to the NFL in a 27-20 victory.

If Big Ben has any serious issues with his shoulder, you can bet Philly's defensive coordinator Jim Johnson will find out about it. It should stay close, but there's no way Donovan McNabb is letting this team drop two in a row. Eagles win 28-17.

13. Browns at Ravens

Is Joe Flacco really this good, and is Derek Anderson really this bad? Two questions that will have both teams realizing their true potential in a Cleveland victory, 26-16.

14. Jaguars at Colts

Do I think the Jaguars' offensive line woes will continue? Absolutely. One of the hugest parts of a team's success is the trenches on both sides of the ball, and it's safe to say the Jags' are hurting. Colts run away with a more confident Peyton Manning, 37-20.

It just doesn't seem possibly for Aaron Rodgers to keep up this no interception thing he's got going on. Besides, when was the last time a Packers corner shut down Terrell Owens? Try never. Cowboys in 38-34.

16. Jets at Chargers

Eric Mangini finally lets Brett favre loose, and the Chargers finally realize just how much their defense really misses Shawne Merriman. Jets win 24-14.
