Premier League: Chelsea Acquires Fernando Torres From Liverpool

Roberto Alvarez-GallosoJan 31, 2011

Chelsea FC has announced that it acquired Fernando Torres from Liverpool FC.

Chelsea is paying an upfront fee of over $70 million, as well as over $300,000 on a weekly basis with bonuses.

The deal is expected to double what Torres is receiving from Liverpool with the new five-year contract worth over $55 million. The total of the deal between Chelsea and Liverpool is expected to be over $120 million.

In order to compensate for the loss of Torres, Liverpool announced that it has acquired Andy Carroll from Newcastle United.

The attempts by Chelsea to purchase Torres including the possibility of exchanging one of its players did not bear fruit until now. Chelsea (at the time of purchasing Torres) was operating at an annual loss of $100 Million

The newly signed player is being flown to London (according to rumor) on the private plane of Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich.

The purpose is for Fernando Torres to receive the physical examination necessary before starting with Chelsea.

The only issues pending (but are minor) appear to be personal ones between Fernando Torres, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

Fernando Torres will also be playing in the UEFA Champions League season as well.

It remains to be seen what will transpire for Chelsea with its remaining EPL Season and UEFA Champion League games.
