Manny Pacquiao/Shane Mosely Is a Given but Sergio Martinez Will Make His Mark

Donald MartinJan 28, 2011

Given Manny's popularity and astonishing repertoire of big fights over the past years, it's naturally a given that his bout with Shane Mosley is one of the most anticipated bouts this year (no matter what anyone has to say about Shane.) However one thing that cannot, and will not be overlooked, is the fact that Sergio Martinez is very likely to outshine the Pacman this year.

Being highly debated as 2010's fighter of the year, Sergio Martinez has shown himself a force to be reckoned with. At age 35 (going on 36 this February), Sergio fights with a tenacity and finesse better than many fighters 10-15 years his junior.

On March 12th, Sergio will face Ukranian junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzindziruk. Martinez claims that it will be the "best fight of his career," and we will hold him to that. He has only shown himself to get better and more aggressive as time goes on. What makes this upcoming fight interesting is the fact that his opponent, Sergiy is also a southpaw like Martinez. This is likely to do away with any unnecessary awkwardness that we have become accustomed to when watching right versus left handed fighters.

Aside from what Sergio can do with his hands, his footwork gives much testament to his fortitude as a fighter. The soccer player in him comes out every time he steps in that ring as he shows much balance and control over his legs.

Martinez will make his mark on the boxing world with a branding iron in his bouts to come. He is the complete package; a fighter that shows much discipline over the several key components of what makes an effective boxer. If all goes well, he is destined to take his career to a whole new level come March 12th.

Furthermore, videos surfacing of his unique training exercises, show that Sergio is dedicated to keeping himself on the edge and pushing his body to the limits by not allowing himself to become comfortable. Granted, its nothing that fighters have not been doing since the dawn of the sport, but at his age, at this point in the game, it has never been more crucial, because comfort is not a luxury that he can afford (ask Oscar De La Hoya).
