Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander: Bradley Outworks and Outscores His Opponent
Timothy Bradley (26-0-11) is the oddsmakers' favorite going into his bout with Devon Alexander (21-0-13) on January 29, 2011 at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan.
I must say, I take my hat off to these two undefeated fighters. At this stage in their careers, they can't do what a lot of other fighters do and continue to lineup the “tomato can” opponents and pad their resume.
Instead, they decided to go head-to-head and put their belts, careers and pride on the line, to give themselves and the fans a verdict for the best in the division.
The fight has been called “Perfect Records: Perfect Matchup."
However, I think I’ll call it, "Welter-Skelter."
For me, this matchup doesn’t signify the best in the division; it’ll just decide the best contender for Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., excluding Amir Khan, who also claims to be the best welterweight.
While we are at it, let’s not forget Andre Berto and the up-and-coming Mexican superstar Saul Alvarez, who also threaten any claim to the best in the division.
I don’t know about you, but I think this is a great time to be a boxing fan!
There are so many possibilities and so many interesting matchups on the road to establishing a true welterweight champion. Let’s hope the fighters and promoters hear our cry.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, though, let’s look at the winner of Bradley-Alexander.
While the young champion Devon Alexander is a game fighter and certainly the most competent boxer Bradley has faced to date, I see Bradley delivering combinations that will confuse and frustrate Alexander.
Alexander will have to find a way to counter Bradley using his natural strength-advantage and put Bradley, who has been down before against Kendall Holt, on the canvas again to have a chance at winning this fight.
This is going to be an exciting match, with Alexander possessing the proverbial "puncher's chance."
However, as we saw in the Holt-Bradley match, Bradley can and will get off the canvas if he needs to and bring a “Desert Storm” that is sure to leave “Alexander the Great” thirsting for a stoppage.
