UFC: Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida Facing the Chopping Block?

Sal DeRoseJan 22, 2011

Tito Ortiz was once a feared name in the UFC's light heavyweight division. But, "The Huntington Beach Badboy" has not won a fight since 2006.

Now, it should come as no surprise that Tito Ortiz faces the chopping block as a possible cut if he loses to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC Fight Night 24.

Tito Ortiz is 0-4-1 in his last five fights and had an injury that pulled him from a fight against Chuck Liddell, and the ending of The Ultimate Fighter.

"Tito's got to win this fight to stay in the UFC," White said. "If he loses this fight, he'll probably retire."

That shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. Tito is 35 after all and his prime fighting days seem way behind him.

But honestly, did anyone see Dana mentioning that Lyoto Machida of all people is facing a must-win situation?

Matt Erickson of MMAFighting.com had the stunning details of what Dana White said.

"He's had two losses in a row," White said. "Right after he won the title, [UFC Announcer Joe] Rogan said this is 'The Machida Era,' and I thought so too. Then Shogun beat him, and then he just lost to Rampage. Now he's fighting Randy Couture in Toronto—and this is a must-win for him."

Ouch. Lyoto Machida, watch out. It seems your job is on the line facing Randy Couture.

Lyoto is a deadly fighter and the fact that a loss to Randy Couture would signal the final straw and the demise of the once-proclaimed King of the light heavyweight division is stunning.

Lyoto is 16-2 overall and is 7-2 in the UFC. Like Dana said, he has two losses in a row (in mine, and a lot of other people's opinions, three losses) and many fighters face expulsion from the UFC after three straight losses.

Machida fights Randy Couture at UFC 129 in Toronto in April.

Machida earned the UFC Light Heavyweight crown against Rashad Evans and defended it controversially against Mauricio Rua in their first fight but then lost in their rematch.

There is zero reason to cut Machida if, in fact, he loses to Couture. Yeah, he has lost three in a row at that point. He's still dominant and, to let Machida go to a rival promotion, say Strikeforce, he will just dominate there and try and get his just revenge against Dana.

Tito Ortiz, again, not a shock to me, but Machida is a huge shocker. He is a great fighter, a little on the boring side to watch, but a great technical fighter. Machida's in a slump—everyone has one, but it doesn't mean cut him.

Sorry, but Machida should get another fight if he loses. He deserves it and has only proven how great he is by winning his first 16 fights in a row. He should get another shot.
