WWE Royal Rumble Mixtape: Picking The Best Matches in the History of the PPV
Decided to start a new feature for all of the major pay per views. I wanted to try and piece together the ultimate card for a particular pay per view. Since the Royal Rumble is a lil under a fortnight away then I believe it is a perfect time.
With a pay per view Mixtape I pick the best matches in the history of the event but with a few parameters:
No wrestler can appear twice on the card.
The full card has to be within the normal allotted time of the event. (In this case, under 3 hours.)
Only one match per title. Example, I cannot place two intercontinental title matches on the card.
Now that everything is laid out here we go...
Opening Match Brock Lesnar Vs Big Show
1 of 8Royal Rumble 2003
To start off I am going to go with Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show for a qualification to enter the Royal Rumble.
Before the match there was some bad blood between the two men and Big Shows manager Paul Heyman.
This match was a hurdle that Brock had to go through to reclaim his Undisputed world title.
The match was fast and furious with plenty of heavy hits and a great way to start the pay per view.
Match Length: 06:29
WWE Tables Match: Hardy Boyz Vs. The Dudley Boyz
2 of 8Royal Rumble 2000
After the success of the Hardy Boyz/Edge and Christian ladder match at No Mercy 1999, the WWE wanted to add the Dudleyz into the mix with their patented tables.
Like the match before this one was so fast paced that if you blinked you may of missed a spot.
This was the beginning for a huge spotlight on the tag team division. At No Mercy the tag teams peak my interest, at Royal Rumble 2000 they had my undivided attention.
Especially with the insane Swanton bomb that Jeff landed on D'Von for the win.
Match Length: 10:18
WWE World Tag Team Championship: The Quebecers Vs. Bret and Owen Hart
3 of 8Royal Rumble 1994
This was a huge step in the Hart brothers feud and the full heel turn of Owen Hart against Bret.
The match had a solid build up within the match. It was the familiar one member of the baby face team gets beaten down and then the other tag team member. But this time the victimized tag team member was Hall of Famer Bret Hart. After being repeatedly hit in the his leg with kicks, submission holds, and foreign objects.
Unlike other classic build ups, the victimized Bret never made a tag to his waiting brother. Instead he tried to win the match with a sharp shooter only to collapse on and have the ref end the match.
The match may not be five stars but the after match, and eventual match at Wrestlemania X, between the two brothers is history making.
Match length 16:54
WWE Intercontinental Title Ladder Match: Chris Jericho Vs Chris Benoit
4 of 8Royal Rumble 2001
Classic match. Two great technical wrestlers putting one of the greatest ladders matches in history.
Like a match later on in the slide show it told a story but had spots that worked within the context of the match.
Great spots like the walls of Jericho on top of the ladder as well as Benoit diving headfirst outside into a waiting steel chair.
Simply a great match!
Match Length 18:44
WWE World Heavywieght Title Match: Batista Vs. Mr. Kennedy
5 of 8Royal Rumble 2007
I had to find a match that would fit my parameters and this worked out pretty well.
I enjoyed the match when I first saw it live. Kennedy looked really strong thoughout the match and actually made it seem like he could win.
But perhaps the best part of the match was that the crowd was loudly behind Mr. Kennedy, the heel, and not Batista, the babyface.
Batista walked out with the title, but Mr. Kennedy looked like the star.
Match Length: 10:29
Streetfight For The WWE Championship: Triple H Vs. Cactus Jack
6 of 8Royal Rumble 2000
A feud that may not of lasted too long, but long enough to give Mick Foley his swan song before his eventual retirement and cementing Triple H as a life long main eventer.
This match was bloody and hardcore. But it also told a great story through the mayhem. Every spot had a purpose and they each gradual grew to the iconic pedigree onto the thumb tacks that helped Triple H retain his title.
Not only is it the best WWE Championship match at the Royal Rumble, it's probably one of the best match in wrestling history... yeah I said it!
Match Length: 26:51
Royal Rumble Match: 1992 Royal Rumble
7 of 8Royal Rumble 1992
Now I know this may be a bit of a cheat by this Royal Rumble deciding the WWF Championship.
But to this day there isn't a better Royal Rumble match from start to finish.
From No.1 The British Bulldog and No. 2 Ted Dibiase and then Ric Flair lasting through the other competitors and finally eliminating Sid Justice and winning his first WWF world title.
Also, the sheer amount of star power at this Royal Rumble is ridiculous here are some notable appearance, the aforementioned British Bulldog, Ted Dibiase, Sid Justice, and Ric Flair, but also : Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Roddy Piper, Jake The Snake Roberts, and Randy Savage just to name a few.
Match length: 1:02:02
In Conclusion
8 of 8
The total length of the mixtape PPV is 154 minutes, with out entrances or vignettes.
But with an extra 26 minutes left I think it will be fine. Hence why I didn't add another match, like Taz vs. Kurt Angle at Royal Rumble 2000.
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed putting it together!
I am working on my mixtape for the Elimination Chamber pay per view and Wrestlemania... they each should come out a little bit before the actual events.
