Bayern's Arjen Robben: 'I Don't Think We Can Win the Title'

alex bakerJan 19, 2011

Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben returned to competitive action Saturday for the first time since losing the World Cup final to Spain with the Netherlands back in July. Robben had suffered a severely torn thigh muscle and spent the latter half of 2010 recuperating following Holland's second place finish in the World Cup.

The fleet-footed winger was subbed on after twenty minutes in Bayern's Bundesliga clash against Wolfsburg after teammate Franck Ribery was forced to come off with a knee injury. Speaking to German soccer's official website after the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Robben said returning to action made him "the happiest player in the Bundesliga."

But despite his elation at finally seeing some playing time after six months off, Robben admitted, "I don't think we can win the title anymore. Dortmund are just having a great season."

Bundesliga table-toppers Borussia Dortmund (15-2-1) are currently 12 points clear at the top and 16 above Bayern (8-4-5) who are languishing in fifth behind Hannover, Mainz and Bayer Leverkusen. The Bavarians have a stated ambition to finish second and Robben concurred that "second place is what we're aiming for," adding that, "the important thing is that we qualify for the Champions League next season."

Bayern won the double of Bundesliga title and German Cup last season and narrowly missed capturing the treble by losing out to Jose' Mourinho's Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

Ribery's injury, which was initially thought to be serious, turned out to be merely a pulled muscle that will see the Frenchmen only miss a few days of training. With Ribery and Robben returning to the lineup of a side that also contains the likes of Thomas Muller, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gomez, Bayern is a team that can tangle with the very best in Europe on a good day.

With few changes to last year's squad and both their midfield talismen soon to be back in good working order, the club is heavily tipped to make an impact in this season's Champions League despite the slow start to their Bundesliga campaign
