An 11th Season for the Kalamazoo Kings Has Yet to Be Confirmed
The Kalamazoo Kings celebrated 10 full seasons in the Frontier League; an 11th is hanging in the balance.
Two words an owner never wants to hear in the same sentence: low and poor.
Low attendance combined with poor records generally lead to the demise of many Independent teams.
Attendance for the Kings dropped nearly 20% from 2009 and a 28-68 record, leaving them 29 games out of first place, can only mean one thing: serious discussions about the future of the franchise.
While the deadline for a decision has been pushed back, reality has reared its ugly head. And despite a history of success, another season like this will not bode well for the owners, the players or the city.
According to mlive.com, 27 player contracts have been exercised for the upcoming campaign; unfortunately Kings owner Bill Wright has no comment on the situation.
“I don’t have a comment yet. We’re analyzing and seeing what’s in store. I don’t want to say something I don’t know for sure. I’ve been told we’re on the schedule and that’s fine.”
A definite answer was scheduled for January 8, and since there has not been any news I will assume the team is still alive.
Kalamazoo was where I made my first official professional appearance, and in all honesty, I hope this story has a different ending than the one we usually see.
Let the Kings rule their kingdom one last time.
