Martin Brundle Backs Lewis Hamilton's Penalty
There is no doubting Lewis Hamilton's massive talent, instant charisma, and true sporting icon status.
He has transformed F1 from an era of Schumacher-dull dominance to a new era of youth and exuberance, with fearless pace and championship contending credentials.
It seems though, that this has been accompanied with a highly intense British following of an overly-fanatical and nationalistic fanbase. It happens sometimes; people cannot accept that their countryman was at fault and immediately blame whoever else they can.
Lewis Hamilton DESERVED the penalty incurred in Belguim; other drivers have not backed him and today British commentator Martin Brundle inadvertently confirmed the rule which cost Hamilton a greater advantage in the title race.
It's just a shame the British media never actually informed the public of the actual facts, rather concentrating on a supposed attack on British sport.
On the drying track of Monza, Felipe Massa was attempting to fight his way through the field in an attempt to gain as big an advantage possible over Lewis. He cut a corner in one of his overtaking attempts, to which Martin Brundle, a former driver himself replied, and the gist of his reply was, "Now stand back Massa, don't attack into the next corner."
For interpretation purposes, he basically said if Massa attacked immediately into the next corner, it would be deemed an unfair advantage...Sound familiar?
To overtake immediately after a failed attempt which ended in off-track action is gaining an unfair advantage—End of!
And before anyone asks, "What have you got against Hamilton?" I want him to win the title; he deserves it for this season's quality drives, consistency, and popular status. He is exactly what the sport needs after years of gradual decline, and hopefully he will end the season in first position.
But there are rules, and there are rules that are broken, and then there are the nationalistic followers who should follow the facts and not the fiction of the action at hand.
